Model engineering forums
« on: October 17, 2017, 11:03:23 pm »
I know I've asked this before, but a quick site search turned up nothing of interest. All I have in my notes is http://www.model-engineer.co.uk

Which model engineering forums do you recommend?

I'm actually looking for a local supplier of some small (3 or 5mm) metal and plastic shafts and some flat plastic stock. I figure a popular enough forum will have a couple of locals hanging around on it, and it might be the sort of stuff they use occasionally.

A bit light-weight in the forum side but they have a useful "jump off" list of suppliers, although, they are, obviously, a bit UK centric.

You might also try searching under "home shop" machining/engineering.

I could defiantly go down the rabbit hole on home made steam engines one day. I am mostly concentrating on home made vacuum tubes now. One right next to me testing as we speak.

Where in NZ are you located? You can buy precision ground drill rod (O1) from Tradetools. You can buy small quantities of plastic (they have a huge range) from Dotmar.

Thats who I use for those things anyway.

It was easy when Trade Tools was in Nelson St but now they're all the way out in Penrose.

Waitemata Hydraulics has quite a bit HW but again for you Aaron they're way out off Lincoln Rd.

Isn't there a big modeling shop at the bottom of Nelson St, not far from where Trade Tools used to be ?

I just put this into Google: 'Modeling supplies Auckland' and there's a heap of hits....maybe most don't stock what you're looking for.

I'd never heard of trade tools until ten minutes ago! Their online catalogue looks OK, and reasonable prices, not insane "RRP" either.

Now you mention it, I do recall a hobby shop down near the Empire. But that was years ago :)
