He was the (late) Linear Technology's (late) Bob Pease, a by all means real engineer, along with the also late Bob Widlar, the inventor of the homonymous current source/mirror and a pioneer of the bandgap voltage reference.

Both of those Bobs did their famous work at (the late) National Semiconductor. For Linear Tech you might be thinking of the (also late) Jim Williams. In fact, burying Williams was the last thing Pease did before his fatal car crash. All is otherwise correct.

Pease had colorfully ranted not just once about the deficiencies and disutility of SPICE simulation. Thence, the Ceiling Bob meme.

Pease wrote an ironic book about avoiding car crashes.  :(

I stand corrected. Thank you for pointing that out.

In the autumn of 1996, I went to Santa Clara for an interview at National semi.

After I had completed a full day of interviews, the last interviewer asked me if I had any questions.
I said that I would like to see Bob Pease’s office. The interviewer mentioned that it was one of the most popular requests for the National Semi visitors.

I can tell you that attempting to capture that awesome mess in a photo, is like attempting to capture the Grand Canyon’s grandeur in a photo.
You simply can’t.

I had a physics teacher that said exactly that. Some years ago someone asked during a class why we can't have a test with the help of the internet. Some people jumped in the bandwagon of the initial idea.

The teacher just replied, "If all of you want, we can have, but it will not help, I will choose questions tailored to be hard to search for solutions. Just because the tests without consultation have questions you can easily use the notebook to solve them, that doesn't mean that said "internet consultation" test will have the same level of questions."

After she finished we could listen the silence in the classroom. The proposal were dismissed. Remember we are talking about the late 90s, early 2000, the years of the Internet Boom were everyone who were young think that the Internet had solution for everything, just shy away of a search in Altavista or Yahoo.

Many people even with the textbook wouldn't pass a physics exam. Other matters are different, history for example, you don't have to understand a thing only memorize. But physics... if you don't understand it there's no way.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...
