In the autumn of 1996, I went to Santa Clara for an interview at National semi.

After I had completed a full day of interviews, the last interviewer asked me if I had any questions.
I said that I would like to see Bob Pease’s office. The interviewer mentioned that it was one of the most popular requests for the National Semi visitors.

I can tell you that attempting to capture that awesome mess in a photo, is like attempting to capture the Grand Canyon’s grandeur in a photo.
You simply can’t.

I had a physics teacher that said exactly that. Some years ago someone asked during a class why we can't have a test with the help of the internet. Some people jumped in the bandwagon of the initial idea.

The teacher just replied, "If all of you want, we can have, but it will not help, I will choose questions tailored to be hard to search for solutions. Just because the tests without consultation have questions you can easily use the notebook to solve them, that doesn't mean that said "internet consultation" test will have the same level of questions."

After she finished we could listen the silence in the classroom. The proposal were dismissed. Remember we are talking about the late 90s, early 2000, the years of the Internet Boom were everyone who were young think that the Internet had solution for everything, just shy away of a search in Altavista or Yahoo.

Many people even with the textbook wouldn't pass a physics exam. Other matters are different, history for example, you don't have to understand a thing only memorize. But physics... if you don't understand it there's no way.

Same thing to me. My signal processing theory professor was asked by some students what they could bring with them at the exams. His answer: Anything that you can drag in by yourself. 70% failed.

In German you could also say "alles was Beine hat" (everything that has legs)  to mean people or animals. And while you would say "alles und jeden" (everything and everyone) to be more precise, the German word "all" really is generic and not limited to things.

Same thing to me. My signal processing theory professor was asked by some students what they could bring with them at the exams. His answer: Anything that you can drag in by yourself. 70% failed.

It may be a myth, but didn't a student bring Richard Feynman into one of his exams, because he fit (stood) on a single sheet of A4 paper?  (You can bring anything in that fits on a single sheet of A4.)

Id imagine an asterisk about bringing in people was added to that rule next year.

I never heard of any of those stories here, but there was a lot of variability to what you could bring on an exam. From "only a pen" up to "here use this laptop for matlab". If they didn't allow A4 notes then i loaded up my fancy TI Nspire calculator with notes (It could hold a whole text book worth of word document-ish text, while the crappy horrible contrast LCD meant nobody could see it from any sort of distance). They did say i can bring a calculator, so i did.

I had a physics teacher that said exactly that. Some years ago someone asked during a class why we can't have a test with the help of the internet. Some people jumped in the bandwagon of the initial idea.

The teacher just replied, "If all of you want, we can have, but it will not help, I will choose questions tailored to be hard to search for solutions. Just because the tests without consultation have questions you can easily use the notebook to solve them, that doesn't mean that said "internet consultation" test will have the same level of questions."

After she finished we could listen the silence in the classroom. The proposal were dismissed. Remember we are talking about the late 90s, early 2000, the years of the Internet Boom were everyone who were young think that the Internet had solution for everything, just shy away of a search in Altavista or Yahoo.

Our electronics exam when i was in Italy allowed us to bring the standard electronics manual that the library had enough of for one por last year student. Thing is no one could understand it.

My boss seems to think you can "just" look stuff up on the internet.

The superlative decapping and analysis which presumably inspired the above meme makes for fascinating reading.

ouch, I did say RTFM to a subcontractor  :palm: They were worried that the pins I had put on my harness drawing were wrong as they were "so short". Well if you just looked at the book you will clearly see that.....

Understandably, different jokes are understood/received differently around the World, due to local politics or regional
understanding etc. There was a world wide competition years ago, to find the 'joke' that the most countries understood,
and thought that it was funny!  The WINNER was actually this...

I don't like that auto-embed for Imgur, if you write it as a link then I think it should stay a link.

It's not very accessible.  Nothing appears whatsoever if you have javascript disabled.  I had to enable 3rd party scripts to see the image. 

It's also a bit of a weird privacy tradeoff just to see the single <img> tag.  From a quick check in my browser debugger: about 72k of javascript, HTML and CSS get loaded from imgur.com; but it also loads a pile of other social and facebook stuff ontop of that.

Same thing to me. My signal processing theory professor was asked by some students what they could bring with them at the exams. His answer: Anything that you can drag in by yourself. 70% failed.

It may be a myth, but didn't a student bring Richard Feynman into one of his exams, because he fit (stood) on a single sheet of A4 paper?  (You can bring anything in that fits on a single sheet of A4.)

The version I heard was closer to basinstreetdesign's.  Professor: "This will be an open-book test." CalTech freshman: "Can I use Feynman?"  Professor, assuming the student is referring to the well-known lecture volumes: "Sure, why not."

I was thinking along the lines of RF interference getting picked up by the long (non-zero-impedence) ground wire.  Might not be valid?

Today I learned that Texas Instruments became the first major manufacturer to enter the market of counterfeit TL072 opamps with some CMOS product of theirs.
That's a very appreciated improvement over the usual crop of relabeled LM358 from AliBay, but what could possibly go wrong? :-DD

Actually no joke i bought some real acupuncture needles for use as probe tips. Sobering to note that of the seven Star Trek principals (incl. Rodenberry) pictured there, only three are still alive (Takei, Nichols, and Koenig)
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

This is from Wikipedia, the image is also there.

Also Enterprise NCC1701 is a Constitution class ship ... I see what they did there.

I've done welds that ugly, with a stick welder (Dog house). But it looks like the mess on the left was also done with a wire feed. Am I imagining that?

Pretty sure the cat thread is supposed to have cats that are still alive. This one has only a 50% chance of that... tho i suppose if you tell people not to look at it then its still fine.

True but it did go to Vandenburg for trial fitting to test if it could launch from there. None of the other orbiters made it there

I just loved, when one of our executives got their new flashy 4K screen laptop, just to realize, that SAP frontend has 0 scaling capabilities, and the entire UI is the size of a postage stamp. Had to get himself an external 1280*1024 monitor just for that.

You'd think so, yet:
For neatly looking text it is difficult to use spaces with proportional fonts. OK with fixed width fonts. TAB helps align lines of text correctly.
Hence the joke, posted here first for the lols of course.

I don't have any hate against russian civilians neither I support war or violence in any way, whatever your country is, but better don't ask me what do I think about politicians who send their people to kill and die in the name of stupid reasons.
Sanctions are a reality and someone made some funny words, that's all, I'm not laughting at anyone's pain, I also do jokes about gas, and we're all screwed up with skyrocketing prices, the whole country transportation services on strike... Crazy expensive electricity (Now "only" $0.35/kWh, we had some weeks at $0.6-$0.9/KWh).

Life needs some humour to keep rolling!

Oh, and I don't have Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter or any other existing social crap :-DD

I just saw a sales listing for a "vape" holder that clips on the top of an xbox controller, but I've lost it and can't find it again.  I don't know why they bother with that euphemism, it's going to get used for soldering irons.

10! = 10 * 9 * 8 * 7 * 6 * 5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1

Lots of shared terms:

60 = 5 * 4 * 3 * 1
3600 = 10 * 6 * 5 * 4 * 3
24 = 4 * 3 * 2

The Mayans used 60 seconds for a good reason - easily divisible.

Very possible that somewhere on the other end of that circuit there might be the 'tail' dangling where it got cut off. And is now live. And, as you say, not earthed either. Awesome.

An old friend of mine somewhere has a power cable made up with two standard British plugs on each end.  The purpose of this, err, "contraption", is to be able to back-feed the entire house from a petrol generator in the event of a power outage.  He assures me he would never forget to isolate the grid connection before connecting this and he is very careful to disconnect it from the generator before the other end but, oh my, I hope his life insurance is up to date.

To be honest, I would be much more concerned with the linemen that may be zapped by a generator trying to feed the entire neighbourhood.

In my house I have an interlock that forces the main breaker to be disengaged in order to engage the generator feed. Very simple mechanism but quite ingenious.

All jokes aside,
The generator would likely see practically a dead short. Depending on the circuit protection on the generator, or even the fuse that connects to the outlet, that may pop first. But a portable generator would really complain about being expected to liven up half a neighbourhood.

I'm not convinced that the voltage applied would be very high, without doing any math: you know, the number of houses connected verses the impedance of the alternator. Many more amps than what the fuses are rated along the way.

But yes, before anyone complains... Pretty dumb to do that when the are safer options. Please don't plug generators straight into your house power outlet. Ask somebody to install the right switch gear so you can do it safely.

To be honest, I would be much more concerned with the linemen that may be zapped by a generator trying to feed the entire neighbourhood.

Linesmen always treat all lines as live, always. The reason is the wires can become live unexpectedly for many reasons such as falling trees or even in case of miscommunication among repair crews.

A big danger would be connecting a running generator to live grid, not realizing it's live. Wouldn't like to be standing anywhere near the generator.

My favorite examples are SpeakON/XLR/TRS to Edison connectors so that you can use a cheap extension cord instead of a speaker cable / microphone cable / line level cable. Yes, people do make them.

This is what happens when some cheapskate tries to do this, but then accidentally plugs the output of a power amplifier into a high-current mains receptacle. At least, that's the only possible explanation I can give for what happened to this poor thing.

You mean 802.3v Mains Power Over Ethernet (MPoE).

Cat6 32awg cores carry roughly what current? I have no idea and are just too lazy to use Google, but as Trump says, the current carrying capacity, "is going to be massive."
[ you can do the REAL math if you want ] Two mains isolation transformers at each end and viola, MPoE. Earth leakage not included.

Dumb idea? MPoE must be a lot more practical than that mains power over WIFI thing from last year?

I thought ethernet NICs were isolated using an isolation transformer.

Exactly, but you can connect 220V mains across the windings of that isolation transformer.

Tho considering the transformers are designed to operate into the MHz at low signal levels, i don't think all that much of the 50Hz would make it across to kill the ethernet chip. Even then the ethernet PHY tends to be a separate IC, so the computer would likely still boot just fine with it dead. But in any case the ethernet port would no longer work because that isolation transformer would quickly get blown up by the massive amount of current flowing trough its windings. Possibly if it blows up spectacularly enough the hot plasma might let mains voltage jump the gap and do some more serious damage. The POE feature is another way to guide it across the gap with enough power to blow an entire machine, but computers never have that.

The other way is to exceed the isolation voltage and jump the gap across the transformer, but 220V won't do that. This takes into the kV range and it is how lightning tends to kill computers via Ethernet.

Genuinely seen that happen to a SMD ferite on a board

Not only did it glow just like a yellow LED in color but it kept glowing for at least 5 seconds before a coworker went "Well it looks like it is on....Wait, we don't have a power LED on these boards!" and turned off the power in a real hurry.

Ever wondered why the typical ChatGPT answers are structured with an introduction, numbered points and a conclusion? Is it the way people normally talk, or is it the way people are supposed to structure their essays? :popcorn:

Tektronix scopes and LAs from that era came with a relatively standard mini-ITX motherboard as I recall, and Windows 2000. While it was possible to run any program on them, I think it was not *this* easy unless you managed to quit the main application (which was in full screen) which would get you back to a Windows desktop (not sure I recall that) or at least a command prompt. But someone having used these more than I did may remember better.
So I don't know how realistic the picture above would be, but that's certainly funny.

HP/Agilent and R&S also have a full-screen windows application with a typical "Sys" or "System" button that took you to the main OS screen.

Fortunately at work all these are in an isolated network and can only be accessible via GPIB on a more modern host PC.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...
