Motor stop capacitor?
« on: February 19, 2013, 11:51:36 pm »
I found a 400uF, 50V capacitor marked "motor stop". Exactly what is it? It is made by Epcos but I couldn't find any documentation on their website.

Maybe it is related to this?

http://www.epcos.com/web/generator/Web/Sections/Components/Page,locale=en,r=263282,a=973484.html

I think it might be unlikely due to the low capacitance but it could be. Any pictures to give us a clue?

It's about the size of a C cell and oddly enough, it is rated in AC voltage.

Motor START capacitor, used in an induction motor to provide starting torque, then disconnected either by a centrifugal switch or a PTC element after a few seconds. Basically a 400uF 50V metal foil capacitor capable of withstanding a short term overload of 100V for around 10 seconds every 5 minutes. Not rated for full time operation at rated voltage.

It really does say "motor stop".
