Mount PDIP onto SOIC board (opposite of most people!)
« on: January 16, 2013, 06:45:27 pm »
Does anyone know of a good way to adapt a PDIP-16 for mounting on a SOIC-16 board outline? I'm repairing some boards with failed SOIC-16 components. Unfortunately, these components are now only available in PDIP-16  |O. The board isn't packed too tightly and there is some vertical space, so a "tall" adapter of some sort could work.

Just one? easiest to deadbug the new chip in a convenient spot next to it and use 30ga wirewrap wire.

For several, make some pcbs with plated holes ove the SOIC pads, then whack off the edges to expose the plating, now you can solder it flush onto the pcb. Maybe solder a cheap flat flex cable to a mating pcb on the DIP.

I've got several of these, and I was hoping to do it a little neater than deadbug style. The plated thru-hole idea seems like a good one. I'll have to price it out and see if it's worth it for a small number of boards. Thanks!

This adapter has vias around the SOIC pins. Maybe you could trim out the SOIC pads between the vias to do the job?

Just a thought.
