Mouser - SLOW SLOW SLOW - any tips???
« on: November 28, 2018, 03:08:33 am »
So i just placed what was maybe my 20th order with Mouser in a few years - this one was a bit smaller than most as I needed some parts to complete a project i missed in my last large order. The last time I chose fedex ground - and despite the complexity of the order (over 1000 parts) it was out the door and on the truck the same day. THIS TIME however i thought maybe using USPS Priority Mail might be much faster (usually two days right?)  - i placed the order last weekend - and as of tonight (tuesday night) it's STILL NOT out the door ... but the shipping label was only generated ... so now I have no choice but to reorder the same parts and have them fedexed overnight if i'm to get them by thursday which is a hard deadline ... UGH ...

was choosing priority mail a deadly mistake? I don't understand their internal workings ... or do i give them too much credit even for expecting consistency?

It could have something to do with it being a holiday weekend. The best thing to do is call them or send an email. If your stuff really hasn't shipped, they might be able to expedite.

I've used both USPS and UPS with them and have never noticed any difference in shipping time. I tried that economy shipping option once, but will never again.

by 'economy shipping option' do  you mean the one where they keep it at fed ex for a few days and then hand it off to regular first class mail at USPS? I think i did that a few times and it SUCKED - hopefuly that's not what they did with mine ... they don't seem to have that service anymore -from what i can tell. There are three options (for small packages) for 7.99 each - one UPS, one USPS and one fedex ground ...tried calling tonight but they were closed already

Yeah, that option. I tried it once just to see how slow it really was. I live 400 miles from Mouser, so I get UPS Ground and Priority Mail in 2 days or less. I wish they offered 1st Class, because most of my small orders would be under the weight limit and the cost would be a couple of dollars less. As it is, I just wait until I need enough stuff that I don't mind the $8 shipping.

Yeah, that's the worst possible service. FedEx never seems to update the tracking status, either, until it says "handed off to local post office for delivery," at which point it shows up on your doorstep.

Well, if the box never was packed and shipped, I can't see that USPS priority was the cause.  Generally, I ALWAYS select FedEx ground, as it is faster TO ME, than UPS or USPS.  I'm in the St. Louis, MO area, and I can get FedEx ground from Digi-Key in 2-3 days all year, and 3-4 days from Mouser.

You might CALL Mouser and see if they can divert the shipment to FedEx, if it hasn't been shipped yet.

YES - from now on i'm NEVER choosing USPS Priority Mail again with them ... judging from the tracking (expected monday - ordered the PREVIOUS WEEKEND) it takes at least one week ... i'll go fedex ground which seems to take three days. a word to the wary ...

I'm having the same problem, an order placed with Mouser on Monday still indicates 'Processing' on the web page. After four days you think they would have shipped the order so there must be an issue somewhere.

Unless indicated otherwise I'm going to blame Donald Trump and his sanctions

I've placed dozens of orders with Mouser in the last 14 years and, other than the one instance I mentioned previously using "economy" shipping, every one has shipped out within 1 day.

Whether USPS or UPS was used made no difference in when the order shipped.

I probably requested USPS Priority Mail for at least half the orders because at one time UPS would not deliver small packages directly to my apartment door and there was no other reason to use them.

I never use FedEx if given a choice because of that time they "delivered" an expensive, and somewhat fragile item, by throwing it up on to my second floor balcony. I was home at the time. The driver did not even attempt a normal delivery.

This is the trick ... you have to figure out which of the delivery services is the least awful in your area. And be prepared to change your choice on a regular basis.

Digi-Key in Canada is awesome. Fedex is the only shipping option, it's always next day and duties/import fees are paid by Digi-Key. Mouser is similar, but I've had anywhere from next day to 5 day delivery with them. It surprised me that Digi-Key shipping in the US is a dog's breakfast of options, all rather poor.

Don't confuse shipping time with time to ship. It doesn't matter much that the carrier can deliver in two days if the shipper takes a week to get it out their door. A large delay in getting the order shipped out seems to be what happened here and that's pretty unusual for either Mouser or Digi-key, at least in my experience. Whatever the reason, it's not likely that the shipping method chosen had anything to do with it.

My order finally shipped after five days and it WAS an export control problem. One tiny chip that was part of the order is a 'dual use' device and someone threw a hissy fit when they saw it on my list. Never mind that the manufacturer of the device is French or that it's available from Element 14 here in Europe, they automatically assume that either I'm making something that will go kaboom or exporting kit to President Assad.  :palm:

yes after doing a few fedex ground (second day) shipments once again with them since the USPS incident AND talking with them on the phone it appears to be the case that ONLY packages going out UPS or FedEx will go out same day ... there will be an extra day of processing involved if you request priority mail (which is weird since i would THINK the speedy service of priority mail normally would necessitate faster packaging for shipment - or at least AS FAST)

so there you have it. don't order via priority unless there's an important delivery related reason to.

Generally as a rule I avoid shipping things with Fedex. They're always the slowest and cost just as much as other shipping methods.
