Forum member turning into guest status ?
« on: January 15, 2014, 04:47:52 pm »
Discovered this when I was trying to find the post made by this particular fellow member, and I just can't find it through the search post by user in the forum search function (->Forum search), also through search member (->Search member), and still no luck. Then checked posts made by that member in my own threads that I know & remember, and all his posts are still there, but it has a "Guest" as status just below the nick, and without any post count at all, for sure he is/was a long time member in this forum with relatively high post count.  :-//

Any idea why is that ? Banned ? or the member deleted or withdraw his own account from the forum ?   ???

From what I've seen, banned members show "Banned" under their userID, so I would think the particular member put in a request to the mods to change their status to "Guest".

When the admins delete an account (moderators can't do this) they can just delete the account or delete the account and all posts from that account.
If the posts are left in place then the user shows up as a guest (I think)

A banned user stays in the system as does all their posts but the account can no longer be used until the ban is lifted or expires.
There's no indication that a user is banned except in a few cases where the users persoanl text has been changed. We no longer do that. There is a mod that displays a banned status, perhaps it will be installed one day.

Here, the forum user that I'm talking about, his post example that I found -> alm's post in Dec 2013, a well known (at least to me) for his wealthy knowledge and experience in T&M instruments, contributed and helped a lot of people here in this forum in the past.

Too bad if he really withdraw his membership, it will be a great loss to this forum.  :'(

That's not something I can check as a moderator, needs admin access at least.  For an account to be deleted, it would have to be at the user's request.
If it was for some serious breach of forum etiquette then they would only have been banned.

Ok, I guess we'll have to wait for Dave.

I didn't delete alm's account!
Hmm, not sure what happened there at all. User can't delete their own accounts, they can only ask for it be deleted.

Wonder why he deleted his account?  :-//
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

Sounds a bit like...

... except that EEVblog respect their users, and will take WAY less than 14 days.

This is what I have. Note that it just says "moderators" must approve the deletion. :-//

Yes indeed.
No complaint from alm directly to me though, so it if was some bug or accident then you'd think he'd contact me about it.
Annoyingly, I don't get alerted about such requests, so I just check periodically and automatically tick all the boxes and group action it.
After all, you are clearly warned about it and have to re-enter your password to do it, so it's not like it can happen by accident.
So I can only presume that alm did it deliberately and I just didn't realise the name at the time and group deleted with a bunch of others?

Time to trace the log maybe ?

To be honest, from Alm's posts all this years, and also I had few offline PMs with him discussing things, he seems like a very mature and adult person that it is very unlikely this to happen, not 100% sure though.  :-//

The moderation log doesn't seem to track account deletions...

Are you familiar with the "bash" command line?

Do you still have access to Alm's email account ? Maybe an email asking at least a confirmation on this matter.

No, once the account is gone, it's gone. Maybe in my personal email somewhere...

I wish I could search his posts for any signs of frustration with the forum.

Oh it does allow you to search for alm's posts still, provided you search for a word he used in one or more posts. I'm going to look at some of them.
