MSc in Advanced Applied Electronics - opinions?
« on: February 14, 2014, 07:09:21 am »
I found an interesting course. It's called Advanced Applied Electronics. I've heard multiple times that a lot of engineering studies aren't "practical" enough. They claim that you are actually learning practical stuff. You do have to finish your bachelor (3 years here in Poland), which I want to do on a different university. I really like the proscpect of learning practical stuff, the additional bonus is that the course is in English. I'd love to hear a proffesional opinion, what do you think about this course? Is it worthwhile?

You didn't provide any information about the program, except its title. So it is very difficult to judge.

Things I would look for are first of all the basics: I.e. is this a proper accredited MSc program, or you do you just get a photoshopped piece of paper in exchange for some money? Well-reputed school/university? Properly equipped and staffed uni? Ratio of teachers to students, etc.

I would not read much into that "applied", "advanced" whatever title stuff. Over the last decades it has become common that universities name their programs more fancy to distinguish themselves from other universities, to show a "unique profile"  |O to attract students and sponsors. Instead, get the course descriptions, try to get as detailed course material as you can. Do they teach solid but modern stuff or is it more selected fancy hype-of-the-day crap? Do they just waggle around with soldering irons (which is technician stuff), or do they teach engineering? Do they just teach you to use a certain software version x.y.z with the excuse that this "industry standard" makes you "employable", or do they teach the principles and basics behind that?
I delete PMs unread. If you have something to say, say it in public.

D'oh. I kept looking at the information page and forgot to include a link  |O

The entire course takes place at the Wroclaw University of Technology, one of the best in the country. As far as I'm aware the labs are very well equipped.

Is there an individual project included? If so, ask to see some examples from previous years.

I think there's an obligatory master's project or paper (as always) but universities are usually reluctant to publish this stuff.

I would like to know if this is significantly different to standard master's studies. Seems like too good an oportunity to miss...
