Title: Mustek 1200 ED plus
Post by: Rick on December 24, 2012, 08:47:18 pm
Hi,

I have a Mustek 1200 ED plus bought in the year 2000, that I did not use for a few years since I bought my Samsung multifunction printer in 2008 which includes also a scanner.
Recently I wanted to connect it to my PC to test it.
It is not detected by the PC as a new device, hence I cannot install the driver. I measured the plug pack output voltage, it is ok.
Does anybody have a service manual for this unit?
I sent an email to Mustek but no answer yet, since it is Christmas.
The board connected to the plug pack has several electrolytic capacitors, those have at least double their rated capacitance values, but I suspect they must be in parallel with each other somehow. Their ESR seem good. I checked the diodes in situ, but they seem to let pass some current in the reverse direction, that's why I want to see if there is anything connected in parallel to those.
The output of the 7805 regulator is 5V. What else can that be? I changed the PC-Scanner connector but that did not help.
How can a scanner which sit a few years on shelves go bad? I thought about capacitors or may be something happened the last time I used it...

why does that prevent you from installing drivers?  http://www.mustek.com.tw/Download/driv_scanr/europe/1200edplus.html (http://www.mustek.com.tw/Download/driv_scanr/europe/1200edplus.html) aren't those the drivers?

May be I can install I don't know but if the computer does not detect any device connected to the printer port, it is not useful.

If you have possibility to run a Linux machine (even if run from a LiveCD), you can just plug the scanner and have a look at bottom of output for 'dmesg' command, it should show if it has detected a new USB device (i.e. if it's alive). No drivers needed.

Ok. I shall run linux from the Linux liveCD I use for other purposes on a daily basis.
Thank you.

Is it supposed to be autodected? The parallel port is quite a dumb port, the only thing you probably need to do is install the driver and point it to LPT1.
Also make sure your printer port is actually enabled in the BIOS and it is set to bidirectional mode.

Right it is on the parallel port and the device works actually as you said...
Thanks a lot.
I was going to screw up a working device.
I have been too much influenced recently by Dave's repair videos;)
