My "Big break!" as an Engineer...
« on: June 24, 2010, 02:22:50 pm »
Hi all,
Not sure if this is the appropriate forum section but I am just a little excited about getting my first graduate job! I have to give a big thanks to dave (and other forum members) for giving interview and assessment day tips, they all payed off! I would also like to say that if there are any other graduates looking for jobs out there that your academic background really doesn't have a massive affect... I only say this as I was the only candidate to have a BSc and not BEng (quite a few had MEng too)... Anyway, good luck to anyone out there looking for a job!

Dave

What do you think might have made the difference in the end?

Congrats!

I would say my ENTHUSIASM! Honestly...I made conversation with the other candidates at the assessment centre and not one of them had any projects on the go. I was told that I was the only person to bring anything in to show and also asked lots of questions out of interest about the company and current situations affecting it within the news etc.

I also got a "real" job employing Dave's techniques this week. Just as a lowly tech(haha), but still... Bringing stuff to show off works!

Hi everyone!

Congratulations, really is a big break! I'm a newbie too: doing my thesis work to be an EEE (Engineer in Execution of Electronics, for whatever it means, one E more => 2/3 of the salary) and working in my first paid job for a few months doing some reverse engineering of circuits and "getting shit done" (ie: simple/cheap/"bulletproof" circuits to suit a particularly broad set of needs).

In all the years in college I relayed so much in the communities of DIYers for not so basic stuff, and well, some of my classmates were so lazy to google things so I came up with a rather lame site http://data.shit.la/

Cheers

PS: this is my first post ever! sorry for bumping an old post, but it's significant (I think)
the problem contains the fooking solution, always

When I had an interview (as a tech) at a local fairly well-known electronics company, I could bet that I was the only one who interviewed who generally had an interest and some knowledge in microcontrollers and stuff. I guess a lot of people in the technician job market aren't as enthusiastic about this sorta stuff like I am. Worked the job for the summer, got a lot of experience and some fun equipment out of it (AVR STK500, a few of their LCDs, a logic analyzer.)

Electronics is the COOLEST industry, hahah.

Many congrats on your first job.

You know the theory, now it is time to learn about engineering. There is a vast difference between what you learnt in the classroom and what is done in the "real world". Still, "find a job you enjoy and you won't have to work a day in your life."

I remember my first job after graduating as an electronic engineering - Designing a box (few wires inside granted)
