going through an old bin of components and found some cool stuff. However, there is one I cannot find a spec sheet for. It is a red, 3-pin, TO-220 package, with a part number GE-->628-2-->719 the arrows indicate position on package from top to bottom. google'd the hell out of it and cant find it. It is probably from the late 1970's or before.

Have you taken a multimeter to it?
If it's a transistor, maybe a 2SB628?

Can we get a pic?
I don't think i've ever seen a red to220, green yes, but never red.

For old silicon, ECG & NTE FIRST, then get out the dusty paper trans sub manuals, they are both online now, I remember paying for the paper versions.
I've seen almost every color trans case, wht, red, blu, grn, yel, gry, brn, cream, and of course, black. All in old audio equipment.
2SA-Jxxxx is Japanese trans numbering, this is old USA number, GE, SYL, RCA, MOT, ETC.

That was quick. Did you get that from the NTE cross reference or ...?

Awesome! Thanks for the quick response. I'm going to write this down, but where did you find the info? here is a pic just for those who are curious. (http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/2164/transistor.jpg)

Yes, that was quicker than going downstairs and searching through the transistor subs manuals.
It looks like a pre-driver used for audio finals I've changed out a few times. When the finals short out they usually take these out by blowing them open. Some small amps, 10-20w, would use these as ouput finals although I hadnt seen too many like that. One old layfette was set up like that, blown to hell cause too many speakers attached, not 4 ohm stable.
