Need to find , if possible youtube alternative ?
« on: February 15, 2014, 04:18:40 pm »
I do not have a youtube channel so Dave's issue's have not been as much of a problem from the viewers perspective , but some issues for me .
Now the last week or so , there seems to be a radical change and getting more useless for my issues .
It would seem that the way it used to be , youtube helped me find what I was interested in / but now it ignores my interests and just shows what it wants me to see , leaving me out of the loop .
So is there some movement towards other sites ?
I am willing to drop everything youtube / google and find other options ?

On another subject , why are the " notify " random ?
Many of the subjects I click on notify I get sent to my mail , it would seem I miss some of the subjects ?
But I defiantly random subjects to my email , some are just one post , the original posters , never seen by me ?

I really wish someone can manage to compete the YT.. since it could finally force Google to do something and not just F*** things up. These G+ integrations etc have really not been good for users nor content providers.

Vimeo looks nice (as a content watcher) and I have seen plenty good material there. But I have no idea how valid alterinative it's for video makers.

Well they are failing here , the last week or so my homepage changed drastically , I use to get lots of content that was relevant to past searches and would check out & like .
Now I can not scroll through my subscriptions , most of the suggested is unrelated to my interests , and more commercial .
So your kinds correct , in that they chasing money , but as far as I can see , they are chasing me away and I use to watch a lot of youtube .
I found Daves site because of interests the related and bought a bunch of things that Dave did on his vids , so they are eliminating my money from there pockets !!!

I wouldn't be too hasty drawing that conclusion. YT (Google) make their money by selling advertising and they can make more money if (and only if) they can induce you to watch more content. So it follows logically that for them to be presenting you with poorly targeted content suggestions means they want to make less money. I don't think so.

Changes that Google introduces, not unlike changes in a species, follow the "survival of the fittest" concept. Those changes that lead to improved revenue (or some other metric) will endure and those that don't will be withdrawn.  I read a book on Google and one interesting concept was how Google introduced changes. They would test it on a small subset of users and measure the results. If the numbers didn't support the idea then they abandoned it.

I got a Nexus 7 in combo with a used miniVNA Pro a couple months ago , every time I turn one I get a message that
Vimeo failed , have not found a fix yet - the last owner installed ?

Thanks for fixing my mistake ;)
Ya if we are outside the box , we get crushed after we get s--t on ;)
I guess I have more interests then they can compute ?
Mostly tech info , some political and anything that makes power , electric , horse power torque or goes bang .
Rewatched some of the Mechanical Universe from PBS , I'm sure that throws them for a loop .

As I was unstacking firewood the other night, I made a note to show youtube videos next year to my wife how to do it right. Bark up in case rain gets under tarp, etc. Stable, and air flow.

Tek 575 curve trcr top shape, Tek 535, Tek 465. Tek 545 Hickok clone, Tesla Model S,  Ohio Scientific c24P SBC, c-64's from club days, Giant electric bicycle, Rigol stuff, Heathkit AR-15's. Heathkit ET- 3400a trainer&interface. Starlink pizza.

I get about 35-40K views per day just from youtube searches on old videos etc.
If I (or others) moved to Vimeo, that would drop to almost zero.
Youtube is the worlds 2nd biggest search engine, and the only real place people go to search for video content.

So what about releasing on both, yt and for example vimeo? Wouldn't a slow transition be an idea? I remember ranting about YT changes here and there but in the end nobody is brave enough to move on. Even uploading the old ones, one at a time, seems still possible.

As a user I can tell I was always F***ed up by YT which looks to me like bullsh*t-TV. Vimeo gives a way better feeling. Also I get the feeling Vimeo has way less crap-videos but much more really high quality stuff. Even the comments often look more educated.
I am just very glad the eevblog videos can be seen on the blog as well as I would not like to visit youtube for them.

So, one up for Vimeo from a consumers side.

You are aware the blog video is hosted on YouTube? Hard to serve a massive amount of video to multiple locations from a single server, you really do need a distributed content network to do that. That does cost money.

For the vast majority of Youtubers, no, not if you want to stay in business as a video content producer.
What I'm saying is that's 30K+ views per day by searches I would lose and never get back if I moved from Youtube.
Vimeo does not have the same user base or search value, by many orders of magnitude.

Personally, my channel would likely survive financially if I dumped youtube (at least in the short term), but most youtubers are not in my position.
If you are really anti-youtube then you really have to be anti-adsense as well, after all, it's all the evil google right?
In that case say goodbye to almost all your advertising income as a content producer.
Only an incredibly foolish full time youtuber would quit youtube, that is why hardly anyone is doing it.

It's easy for someone who's livelihood and lifestyle does not depend on youtube to say dump youtube, but in reality it ain't that easy, or wise for those who rely on it.
And it's not only that, but many of us, for all it's faults, still like youtube and have built up an audience here, and it would be hurting them by pulling out.

I can well understand your points. If your income depends on the number of searches and stuff you can't beat the biggest possible network, I guess. I think my points were just too short sighted as I have no experience as a content producer.  :-//

I find the default YouTube user experience to be horrible to the point of unusable. If not for a comprehensive hosts file and NoScript, I doubt I would ever go there by choice. They seem to be run by the same bunch of incompetent idiots that are ruining eBay. Of course most of the world now seems to be populated by brain damaged Twittering, Facebook junkies, so no wonder.

Dave already posts it on this alternative and clean site ;-)

BTW, I consume the new videos using my podcast player on my phone.  Sometimes I watch the video and sometimes just the audio stream (e.g. #580 QA).
