Negative Feedback T-Shirt Design Contest
« on: April 24, 2013, 11:00:17 pm »
I'm running a trial contest on 99 designs to see if someone can design a new Negative Feedback circuit I want to put on TeeSpring.
Check it out. I don't think anyone but me can vote though, but comments are welcome on here.

I think #4 are #5 are best out of the bunch so far.
I don't like the ones that just changed the font a bit and the colour, I could have done that myself.

Seriously though, EE's will get it and for everyone else multiple colours for emphasis, or aesthetic reasons will not help.
Keep the design simple. It works best when it just divides the world into those who get it and everyone else.

Of course. Muggles aren't meant to get it. Although I have had muggles tell me they like the slogan, even though they didn't get the circuit.
I wanted to see if anyone could come up with some creative flair of some sort, we'll see. Otherwise I've done my dough.

One possible enhancement, capture the smell of 'magic smoke' and add a
'scratch and sniff' element to the T shirt.

I think we have reached the limit with a static representation of the circuit. Would be nice if some animated graphics could be added.

I was expecting someone to warp it, add some perspective, or at least do something with it. Although I'm not offering much money here, so they will do as little work as possible I guess and hope they get lucky?

These two could be combined. Embedded electronics? Wash and sniff?  ;)

I like it. I think it needs one tweak, though - make "I only give negative feedback" stand out somehow from the schematic labels. My tired eyes started to read "I only give Vout"...

Yes, that's what I first saw too.
I think the PCB traces and background colour are too distracting, and the font hard to read, but the concept work I think.

I like #6, clean and clear, like what you'd want to see on a board

(with maybe a slight color change, for educational purposes, highlighting the negative feedback)

i vote for this one as well !

like the pcb pattern. nice touch. shows the designer knows a bit about electronics. The others are just 'font work'...

MrDunne #16 !!! has my vote. and it would look great on black or white background !

#18 .. the font for 'feedback' is just ... plain wrong.. that's a font for a football or baseball team...

How about "I only give" and the circuit in place of the words "negative feedback".

Or, similarly: "I only give..." and then the formula.

Those that change font color are difficult to read.

#19 has good slogan visibility but should maybe be scaled down a little

#37 and #18 have a nice circuit picture, but their slogan is "I only give"

#16 is a nice concept, highlighting the feedback resistor makes it look too smeared though

#34 is nice and subtle. Now, plain white letters please!

Only #1 grabbed me. Not the yellow on white though.

Seconded. #1 is the only one I'd pay $$ for.

a) it looks like a traffic warning sign
b) the text is "negative", i.e., the absence of color
c) the schematic is readable and recognizable by those who will get the joke
d) a single color design is cheaper to produce

Flashy colors and "creative" fonts will make the shirt appeal more to those that don't get it.

If you really want to go there, you might as well put kittens on the EEVBlog logo.  :palm:

I've selected 8 shirts I think are the front runners from 8 different designers, please vote in the poll!

Only 9 hours left till I have to chose the finalists, then ultimately one winner.
The crowd sourced tshirt campaign will only allow one design though.

Early polling puts #34 out in front.
Probably not surprising given that it's similar to my existing design in terms on size, placement, colour, usage etc.
I'd get him to redo it with my hand drawn circuit though.

I don't think #1 and #34 would be improved with your hand drawn design. They have a very geometric rectilinear "vibe" that appeals. Well, too me anyway.

But then that takes away my little personal touch  :'(

Quote
However, I think #47  might have issues with different shirt sizes. I assume there is a single size design which is applied to different sized shirts, so a large shirt (me unfortunately) might not look quite as good as the design completely filling a small shirt.

Good question. I don't know if they scale the design slightly for different size shirts. I would have thought so  :-//

Quote
It is those traces running off to the periphery and the Vout running all the way up to the sleeve.

Yes, I would get the design smaller so Vout doesn't run off the side.

Quote
I slightly prefer #47 to #37 but think #37 is a better fitting design for a shirtfront. Is it more costly to have more colours?

I don't think so, will have to check.

Quote
In any case I am amazed at how well this process has seemed to work. Perhaps that is partly because designs I like have filtered up. I wish I could pick horses in the Melbourne Cup as well.  ;)

I was sceptical at first too as some very ordinary designs rolled in, but now I'd be happy with at least 3 of them almost as-is.
The alternative was to try the woman who did our Amp Hour t-shirt. But that was a one-shot deal, so I liked the idea of getting many different ones to pick from.

The 1st round is coming to an end I'll have to pick some designs to send though to the next round.
I'll also need to tell them about any tweaks or alternatives that I want.
Based on the votes I think I'll put through:
#34 http://99designs.com.au/t-shirt-design/contests/electronics-themed-t-shirt-design-revamp-required-213145/entries/34
#37 http://99designs.com.au/t-shirt-design/contests/electronics-themed-t-shirt-design-revamp-required-213145/entries/37
#47 http://99designs.com.au/t-shirt-design/contests/electronics-themed-t-shirt-design-revamp-required-213145/entries/47

For #34 I think I'll ask for replacement of my hand drawn circuit. All white text, and all orange text variants (with opposite colour circuit)
#47 just needs to be a bit smaller
#37 smaller I Only Give text, and bigger Negative Feedback text so it stands out more. Perhaps even orange text to stand out?

Is my assessment there right?
Comments?

Will have another poll on the final round.

I have no definite opinion about either design, but I wonder if the slogan has to be fixed?
Maybe something along the lines of "I can't give positive feedback" or "I never give positive feedback"?
Or to make it very clear: "I shall never give positive feedback!"

So ...

... am I the only one who noticed (and is bothered by) the misaligned junction point on the circuit drawing of #19 / #34?

I tried to read the whole thread but I didn't see anyone mentioning this.

I would buy #36.

Cheers. :)

I do not understand why to use a non-inverting aplifier. Of course the OP gives negative feedback but the feedback of the whole schematic is still positive, which I do not like at all.

PS. Greetings from Austria not Australia

There is no positive feedback in that schematic. This is positive feedback. R2, specifically.

One may want to consider the 'PC' aspect and offer an alternative.

For example, up and coming engineers may want to wear one of these around the office or company function from time to time.  If he or she expects any type of promotion in the eyes of current management and or HR types The slogan 'I only give NEGATIVE feedback' is a show stopper.

On the other hand an opamp osc with the slogan 'I only give POSITIVE feedback' may be just what tilts him or her over sharp edge with some advantage in their eyes. You may think this is ridiculous until you've spent five minutes with an HR type or sorry to say a know nothing mgr. I'm not suggesting ALL mgr's are duds but too many are to take a chance.

Dave, this could be a win win for you with TWO nice offerings.

Having spent 30 plus years in the engineering/business world with 70% in mgt I personally would have second thoughts in today's dog eat dog world wearing the NEGATIVE FB shirt around the office or at company events for fear that it could be a career killer. That said ( I really like the shirt and slogan ) on a personal level.

It would be a crime to see a talented EE either passed by or scolded by a senior 'Muggles aren't meant to get it!' as you say. ;)

If you have a manager who's too much of a dumbass to recognize that it's a joke, I'd say that job is probably a bit of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation where if you want any chance of keeping your job at all, you should probably refrain from wearing T-shirts with any sort of joke on them. The rest of us will wear the one that doesn't make us look like overly happy school counselors.

I would like #47 if the circuit was on the left and text on the right.

What? #34 is the current front runner? Are you kidding me? Of the 8 designs I got to vote on it was one of the ok ones but wasn't one of my top 3.

... am I the only one who noticed (and is bothered by) the misaligned junction point on the circuit drawing of #19 / #34?

I notice it. I prefer my hand drawn one and will ask him to change this.

my top two are the bottom two in the pack of 8 and my bottom two are the top 2, figures.

I find #34 is too elongated, looking like a laser gun

Yes, I agree it is now looking too elongated. If you could shorten the Vin just a little and slightly lower the Gnd point. Alternatively bring Rg over to the left a little more. Vin just looks like it sticks out a bit too much and that might waste a bit of the space under it. I'd like to see the Gnd point being the lowest part of the design.

That's getting bit fussy now  :P

I suppose you have to pick one winner but I think you should offer several designs for purchase. Some others are too good to abandon entirely.

Maybe, but I can only award one winner. I guess I could offer to by the design from the runner up.
I'm not fussy how many designs I offer, but with crowd souring, if you don't meet the minimum number for a design, then no one gets squat. More designs could fragment the numbers a bit?  :-//
Will probably also offer the Flex Capacitor, err, sorry, Fluxgate Condenser shirt as-is.
Don't know about the 555 timer one?  :-//

Whichever one wins, I'm buying it! Provided, of course, that it is available through your Zazzle shop - I need more Xs in the size markings than what is usually available.

Cheers,
Panzer

The alternating colours of the text in the original #34 meant you could easily read it without sticking your face in the wearers chest.

#66 has better artwork but #34 had a better colour selection.

Hi Dave, where will you be able to buy these T-Shirts from?

Hopefully in the next day or two.
I already have the 555 timer shirt up, and want to put up the Negetive Feedback one and the old fluxgate condenser one.

Would have ordered one of these if the PayPal login site that teespring redirects me to would be SSL secure.
But it isn't, so I didn't. :--
