JUST as I had finished typing the word... 'Proliferous' it half sort of crashed, and produced the following
screen, changed to pink, and with the coding on the bottom-right. Captured with other software....

That's the element picker mode of uBlock Origin.

You must have somehow activated it with a shortkey or something.

Yes, that's the element picker of uBlock origin (or a sibling of uBlock). It is a very useful function to allow remove elements of a page. Usually there's no keyboard shortcut implemented in uOrigin. No idea why that got activated.

But you should learn this functionality. With it you can remove some annoying areas of a webpage. To enable it just klick on the uO icon and select the 'picker' tool. Now you see a similar behavior you posted. With the mouse you can select an area (it will be highlighted in red). If you have selected an area by clicking on it in the lower right the window gets more visible and allow you to preview the result. If you're happy with it, click on 'create' and the filter rule is saved.

If you created a rule that renders a webpage useless, you can edit/remove the filter in the settings of uBlock origin under the 'my Filters' tab.

Someone forget to word them up they picked the wrong forum to try   

and may cop a reverse engineered hack, which may reduce the chances of getting back to alien land intact..

You are right!!  I use 'uBlock Origin', and I just checked it on the Element Picker Mode. 
However, I didn't hit any shortcut keys, and I just checked the uBlock settings, and there
are no shortcuts assigned.

It's funny, that it happened immediately when hitting the spacebar after typing that word ?
That's when the correct spelling of the previous word is auto-checked. (I've tried it again, since,
with that word 'proliferous' but causes no problem now. Ironically, when typing it, it is underlined
in red. Right-Clicking then on the word, shows only 2 options!  'proliferates' & 'pestiferous'   

I thought 'proliferous' was a proper word!! 
Anyway, thanks for the info !!
