New House: How to tell which cableoutlet goes to which line?
« on: August 20, 2017, 09:38:21 pm »
I moved into this new house that has about 10 bed rooms. Its less then 10 years old and as far as I can tell;
It was built with for cable TV RG6
It was later upgraded to a satellite But not sure where the TVs were the wiring has been hacked by Verizon.
It was wired for fios a few years ago. TERRIBLE job everything was just hacked apart and rushed. Instead of connectors there are just holes drilled; with eithernet and cables shoved through them. It looks like there was last two TV's.

So there is one bed room I want the fios TV to travel down the RG6 up to.

How do I tell which cable from the outside goes to the bundle of cables outside the house. Trying to connect a cable box to the room and playing around with cables out side is not really an option because I don't know if the source signal is really working. How would the people that work for the company trace the wires assuming there is nothing hooked up? Almost like I need to do a continuity test with 100's of feet of leads which is not practical.

Cheapest way is to disconnect the cables where they come in at the street. Then Short the copper wire in the middle of the F connector to the outer shell. Then measure the bundle at the other end for the short. If you do this one at a time it would be possible to map the cables. If that seems complicated something like Klein Tools VDV512-058 should do the trick.

That's what I was thinking, I didn't want to hack up the cables more but my OCD is going to lead to me redoing that anyways.
