"New" or "Revolutionary" Tech That's Really Nothing New
« on: August 14, 2019, 08:10:09 pm »
Found this on an ad. :palm:

https://trysafepersonalalarm.com/safety/protection2.php?zero=8asti87t43y8iksyth4iuktyh874e5gy5&affId=CB771A3E&power=gsiou7gyf8iwastgf47&c1=us&c2=ununmob_po50&win=fuagw6487iwt764tg6fuyty7u4ktfu6t7ue&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0qHh-YyD5AIV0P7hCh2yjgucEAEYASAAEgIJufD_BwE

these things have been around for a long time now, and they aren't always effective, Wikipedia even says

Quote
Due attention must be given to the fact that these devices can give a 'false sense of security' and therefore place the individual in danger.
::)

I'm sure there's plenty more examples of stuff claiming to be the "latest and greatest" when it's actually just something simple.

I love that website....

https://trysafepersonalalarm.com/safety/protection2.php

You are greeted with a huge banner that says "[Town you live in] : Recent attacks on Seniors.... etc...".    :scared:  :-DD

Then you realize all they are doing is geo-pinning down whatever IP loads the site to alarm visitors. Just load it up through this proxy and be prepared to be amazed:

https://www.proxysite.com

Try all the different US servers to see where they are located. Then the European ones aren't recognized.

Nothing new about that site or that technology, but I absolutely hate the marketing crap, scare tactics and tom-foolery they try to push on people, especially poor unsuspecting users (probably a lot of seniors) who believe this garbage and think that their neighbourhood is becoming a crime-infested cesspool. Shame on these companies for doing this garbage.

Anyways this website you linked above is nothing but a shill to offload this eBay garbage:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Pack-Safe-Personal-Handy-Alarm-Self-defense-Keychain-Emergency-Attack-130dB/223574958859

You can buy 3 for $14 US on the eBay link above. On the website above they have a fake "timer" that says if you order within the next 30 minutes you get it 50% off $80 (or $39.95) and then a wheel of fortune thing pops up to let you save a bit more money. Then I'm sure there is shipping which costs extra and well-padded. Ok so assume you pick 1 up for $25 after saving HUGE  :-DD  you are still paying $75 for a 3-pack which you can find on eBay for under $15.

Sorry if I derailed the thread, but I am not really sure where we are supposed to be going with this topic.... except that I would venture to say MOST tech you see marketed this way to the masses is not new at all. It is stuff that has been commoditized to the point where it is cheap enough to make that it can spawn these shill sites that do a good job at MARKETING it as new.

Woah not often I see something posted from my general region.  I'm a couple hours north of Tshores.   Unfortunately violence and crime in general here has been going up at a rapid pace so this article does not surprise me.

These type of devices are normally used in case you run into bears in the bush, not sure why it's being marketed as something new though.  My grandma used to give us one when we'd go in the bush alone back when we were kids.

Edit WAIT NM so this "article" is just a whole ad in itself that makes up a head line based on a city near you.   What a missleading BS thing to do.

Absolutely. ;D

That said, even if nothing new, and simple enough, the idea of wearing a small alarm that's easy to activate and makes a lot of noise is not that bad. Especially for older people that are hearing impaired. The damn thing would be pretty annoying or even painful to anyone around while they would barely hear it. ;D

I thought the OP was referencing an ad in the article I did not realize the actual article itself was disguised as an ad itself and not even real news.   What a shitty thing to do though.  I admit I got caught by it.    |O

Advertorials come in way more subtle and deceiving flavours nowadays. Not to mention product placement and the like. We're inundated in ads designed to not look like ads.

From OP's link, the banner said "Advertorial"

I suppose calling it advertisement would have been driven readers away within seconds.  Calling it "Advertorial" may fool some to take them seriously, perhaps.
