I am with you Solder, I did not wanted an active TPMS in my car. ...and yes I hope somebody will "hack" them, I even know how to..... but I can't because I do not want to lose my job. |

Even something as simple as building a battery compartment into the rim, so the battery becomes user replaceable, would be much more acceptable than the disposable solution used now. |

Possibly with slight changes to the regulations, to allow the new system. Examples: Getting the power consumption down (tiny, ultra short burst radio signal, hence very low power consumption) considerably and/or a long life in years, battery and/or using ABS speed sensors and fixing the problems/issues with that system and/or building some kind of tiny generators, and super capacitors, a bit like some hand powered torches. Maybe MEMS (it allows lots of things to be done, which can solve some problems) can be used to fix the life expectancy problem. Maybe there are other, even lower power consumption, methods of communicating. E.g. IR Leds (if they can be optically guided, outside of where the pressure sensors are), and detecting it using the pre-existing cameras, fitted to cars these days. Maybe the ABS speed sensor system, could watch/model the air pressure changes, as the tyres warm up (outside temp is known, acceleration/braking is known), to detect/solve the issues with it. Maybe make it so that, at least trained garage mechanics, can change some form of small, built in battery. That would then at least be a lot cheaper. I.e. Some kind of CR2032 or special battery, well screwed, inside the sensors housing. But changeable by a trained (for this), car mechanic, in a few minutes (with the right tools). A bit like a watch battery case, where you need to remove some tiny screws or use a special tool, to get the watch apart, and change its battery. Then it would be more like a £100 fix every 5 years, rather than a £500 fix, because of the new parts which are needed. Maybe pot just the battery and a suitably reliable connector. So that a much cheaper replacement can be used. I.e. a battery pack (already vibration resistant and suitable for the temperature range), rather than the entire unit. Alternatively, get the costs of the unit down and sell it cheaply and/or allow it to be a standardised part. Hence it can be made/sold, at a much lower price. A bit like you can buy standard bulbs for your car (older, as they tend to be LEDs, these days). But, I agree, it is NOT easy. There are technical issues to be solved. |

All good ideas, but none of then will survive the industrialization process. DIY solution could be a hope, so when it stops working you know how to fix it. that said the sensors are not very easy accessible, you need this machine in your garage: In some cases the best sensors is having no sensor at all. |
