Hi All

I have just put a new video on my channel :

Basically I open a Brand New ADSL Wireless router, and connect onto its Serial Port Pads. (Includes me trying out a new soldering iron).

Of course the Router is a locked down one, so we can access the start up messages, but login is rejected by the operating system.

I see you came to Durbs to buy it, and were near me as well. Soldering station has 2 settings, on and off, set to max as it is a basic light dimmer. Myself I would have just soldered in 2 low value SMD resistors in there from any old board. For passwords there are a few to try, normally admin admin, root root and telkom telkom work on these.

Yep, Had to go to my Brother-In-Laws baby shower in Pinetown.
Told SWMBO that we must leave at 7:30, so that we will have time to go to her shop (Everlasting in Arbour Crossing), and to A1 Radio before it closes.

Well, Guess what, Ended leaving at 8:00, And Between MCD's and Everlasting, we got to A1 about 10 minutes before closing (unfair considering the 2 or so hours at Everlasting). Then straight after that rushed through to the Baby Shower [Oh, and in between all this had to buy a new shirt as well, cos the 2 year old boy was not feeling too well, and decided to throw up his Mcdonalds all over me]

So, that was my Durban day, at least for the next couple of months.

The problem with those routers, is that they are Mweb specific, and have been locked to only work with mweb adsl usernames.
They also remote configure the router using TR629 or something like that, so the admin/admin account will let you access the web interface, but not many advanced sections of it. Telnet and serial login consoles for the admin/admin is also rejected by the security in the router.

I have a Temperature controller module and Thermocouple, perhaps oneday I will change the cable to the Soldering Stations handle {make it a 5 core, 2 power, 1 Earth, 2 Thermocouple), or maybe even 4 core [where I use the Neutral or Earth for one leg of the thermocouple] and then build it in.

Mweb modems, I remember those from dial up days. Used to buy them by the half dozen as they failed so regularly, but they were cheap and throw away. Wonder if you can reflash them with another firmware, but never had one to destroy. That soldering iron is not worth upgrading, but is fine as is and is good enough for casual use. Look for a SL20 or SL30 instead, uses the same tips.

Mweb dialup modems,
I actually personally met the guy from Duxbury that wrote the firmware for them.
The secret was the banner that the dialup server provided once the modems had trained. If the modem did not see specific formatted banner, then it hung up after 30 seconds.(hence if you hyperterm dialled into a mweb pop that allowed mweb locked modems, you would see the banner, some ascii characters, and then a copyright statement on the banner.

When I worked at a local isp, we had them do network locked modems, that, just after training, they would decode the first part of ppp protocol, and looked for the suffix which was the isps domain. All dialup accounts had usernames user@ispname.co.za or user@ispname.co.za@is.co.za.
If it did not see ispname there, it would drop connection after 30s.

of course he had to do some debugging in our office, but the bugger cleared the source code off of the machine he used. Would have been interesting to see the code.

With this router, looks like I can force bootp mode by holding reset while powering on, but I have not managed to find firmware for this model (yet).

Next time you bring SWMBO to shop, go across the road from Everlast to China Mall, and go up the escalator to see toys for little ( or not) boys. Take her to the China City ( old Wheel) and then you can get some time to relax.

I remember when Everlast  burnt down ( was there the day before) and it was interesting when the Forsdicks building ( now China Mall) had a fire that burnt around 800 cars. Metro had every fire engine they had there pouring I would guess 2Ml of water and foam into the building. they were pulling burnt wrecks from there for months afterwards. No insurance.........
