Newark ripping off customers on shipping
« on: December 21, 2022, 05:28:46 pm »
Recently I made a purchase at Newark, they have the Newark flat rate at $9.99. Then I received an email saying they shipped the items using UPS.

When I buy at Digi-Key or Mouser they have the FedEx or UPS option and it is $6.99, so Newark is getting extra $3.00 for each customer

2 or 3 day delivery is more expensive than $9.99 (Based on Digi-Key prices), even if this is the case I would like to have the option to select what service I want myself

Now if they are charging a $3.00 shipping fee for whatever reason, Digi-Key and Mouser don't do that.

So be aware, if you have the chance to buy from Digi-Key or Mouser, I will recommend you to do it, otherwise you will be charged an extra $3.00 on shipping

They are not ripping off but subsidizing the shipping in most cases. If you see a lower price for the same type of shipping somewhere, most likely they are subsidizing it more.

If you are concerned about $3 shipping cost difference, consider cost of the parts first. Option with cheaper shipping often will get you a more expensive order overall.

lol

First of all it tells you the shipping cost when you check out, if you don't like it don't buy it.
Second, $10 is very very reasonably priced for shipping, if not a loss leader as wraper points out. Keep in mind this includes packaging costs as well.

It's possible DigiKey has negotiated a better rate with UPS. Big companies like this don't pay retail prices for shipping, they negotiate with the shippers and the higher volume they are, the better rates they can typically get.

Amen.
The costs are shown up front.
But it's all about whining and dining these days.

I have avoided Newark and their parent Farnell for some time due to their relatively high cost of shipping, but also because the company has been unreliable in the past.  I've had too many orders with the wrong parts, which has been a hassle to sort out.  Unless I need it next day, it's usually Digi-Key or Mouser now.

Agree 100%

For some orders it will still be cheaper than other options, though.   For example, folks looking for a cheap usable usb scope (and can live with 25MHz bandwidth) can pick up their multicomp pro re-branded version of the owon vds1022 for $56 + $10 shipping, which will still be cheaper than aliexpress prices for the vds1022.

If I was really worried about shipping costs I would use Digikey and snail-mail a check for the order, as this gives free shipping within the US.   I have only done this once, though, as it adds a number of days and some items may be out of stock by the time the order goes through.

I'm surprised that DigiKey still does free shipping if you pay by check. I'd have thought that the rarity of anyone paying by check would mean extra manual labor to deal with the order and higher costs to them, at least eating up what is saved on credit card fees. Someone has to open the envelope, stamp the endorsement on the check and deposit it.

The recent Newark order (this month) had
about 0.5 kg of batteries and some smd.
Merchandise Total:    $66.28
               Freight Total:    $0.00
               Tax Total:    $3.97
               Order Total:    $70.25
               Sale in:    USD

I am hobbiest, not a big spender, but will buy everything from Newark if in stock there.

And deal with it when it's in the wrong amount.

I tried this for the first time earlier this year, mostly as an experiment.  I setup my cart online and went through most of the checkout in order to have the correct amount, including tariffs and tax.  My order also only included items that had a pretty large stock so everything was available when my check arrived (along with a paper copy of my desired order).  There were no glitches with my order, so I don't know how it goes when the amount is wrong or when items are out of stock.

But I was surprised, too.  Almost made me feel guilty...

Newark has always charged almost $20 to Spain.
And that was 10 years ago. Now that's some serious stabbing.

But is that Newark's doing or Spain's doing? I mean do other suppliers charge less to deliver there?

Farnell charges $14 for local shipping, but some parts are only available from Newark US, so it increases to $18, same as Mouser.
Then comes RS, just $5+VAT, however lately they're lacking a lot of stuff, but normally my choice is clear!
