Newark ripping off customers on shipping
DavidDLC:
Recently I made a purchase at Newark, they have the Newark flat rate at $9.99. Then I received an email saying they shipped the items using UPS.
When I buy at Digi-Key or Mouser they have the FedEx or UPS option and it is $6.99, so Newark is getting extra $3.00 for each customer
2 or 3 day delivery is more expensive than $9.99 (Based on Digi-Key prices), even if this is the case I would like to have the option to select what service I want myself
Now if they are charging a $3.00 shipping fee for whatever reason, Digi-Key and Mouser don't do that.
So be aware, if you have the chance to buy from Digi-Key or Mouser, I will recommend you to do it, otherwise you will be charged an extra $3.00 on shipping

They are not ripping off but subsidizing the shipping in most cases. If you see a lower price for the same type of shipping somewhere, most likely they are subsidizing it more.

If you are concerned about $3 shipping cost difference, consider cost of the parts first. Option with cheaper shipping often will get you a more expensive order overall.

lol
First of all it tells you the shipping cost when you check out, if you don't like it don't buy it.
Second, $10 is very very reasonably priced for shipping, if not a loss leader as wraper points out. Keep in mind this includes packaging costs as well.

It's possible DigiKey has negotiated a better rate with UPS. Big companies like this don't pay retail prices for shipping, they negotiate with the shippers and the higher volume they are, the better rates they can typically get.

Amen.
The costs are shown up front.
But it's all about whining and dining these days.
