I grew about 55 tomato plants this past year.  Bad year, summer not warm, frost came early, but I turned on the sprinkler about 5 times on frosty nights so the tomatoes wouldn't freeze and managed to keep the tomatoes on the plant 3 extra weeks till they mostly all ripened (was suckering them extensively early because of the no hope summer).

My dad used to use old bedsheets to cover his tomatoes.

Put them on the window sill till they ripened (had 2 window sills and half the kitchen table covered).  Ate the last ripened tomato on Dec 15th. Picture taken Oct. 17th.

Seeing that the thermometer in the previous shot reminded me that I took the next shot this morning.  Any Australian ever experience -38*C? It will be colder than that still, we're just into the first week of Winter so far  :palm:.

not much leeway left

Jan 02, colder still, -42.5*C

and what it looked like outside, freezing fog

"spit goes clink"

the reciprocal

"spit goes spzzzzt"

it was something like 55 45-50*C in The Olgas (there you go, didn't know they changed the name to Kata Tjuta), a bit too hot for me, I didn't get very far walking, headed back to the shade.  A few Aborigines walked by, spears in hand, asked for matches and were elated to get a pack, they didn't complain about the heat at all, all smiles

Don't forget to factor in the wind chill. At that temp, a slight 10km/h breeze could dip the wind chill temp down 10 more degrees C. Got frostbitten once in those conditions. Not pleasant.

My friend gets up at 5am daily and reported -47*C, -46*C, -42*C on subsequent days, but I checked lows so he must be including wind chill factor.
I do 50km to 67km push bike rides in the winter (Nokian studs), but never go below -18*C (prefer -10*C) and wear 2 balaclavas to cover the forehead, face and neck.  Just too risky any colder for that amount of time.

what a shocker...Jim Jim Falls in Kakadu froze over  ???

actually, it's Minnehaha Falls in Minnesota, USA

Never been that cold, but lived in a town where winter lows were in the teens ( 15C was cold to us), and we often had upcountry visitors come and drop dead from heatstroke, in winter. The average day was sunup 15-20C, 8AM 25C, 10AM 30C and at 1PM 40-42C, dropping to 40C at around 7PM. We would drink around 50l of water in the shop each day, for a shop of 10 people, not counting the water for teatime.

When our aircon detonated one fine summer's day and left pieces all over the roof and the concrete apron we were regularly measuring temperatures above 60C indoors.

It is a nice 19 Celsius out side down in the bible belt.
I'm not saying we should kill all stupid people. I'm just saying that we should remove all product safety labels and let natural selection do its work.

I swear to god, I will never again bitch that it's hot when it's 35C here. :scared: :scared:

Hmm, new years resolution? Pass the linear algebra exam my college so lovingly set up for tomorrow morning? (jan 2)  :--

And when talking about temperatures, this is from January last year:

I just thought it was fun with the (almost) symmetry around 0ºC, we frequently get down to -25ºC here, can't wait for proper winter now  ;D

-38 ! Where do you live, Nunavut?

I'm more southerly than Vancouver (I'm south of the 49th parallel)

Actually, it's been warmer in Repulse Bay Nunavut lately.

I guess you're not a candidate to live in Fargo, ND or Jackson, WY

although it is warmer in North Dakota these days

transporting volatile oil mixes by train is getting to be quite hazardous remembering also Lac Megantique in Quebec.
