NI's New Logo LOL
« on: January 13, 2021, 08:00:20 pm »
Apparently this is old news (June 2020?) but this has got to be one of the worst re-brands I've ever seen:

https://www.ni.com/en-us.html

Also, I wonder where they got the inspiration from.  :-DD

Corporate logo changes are usually driven by insecurity. To feel important or relevant CEO's change the logo or company name. The NI one reminds me of Game of Life patterns my machine makes, a few pixels.
Such a waste of cash for the artwork, new signs, to reprint business cards, manuals etc. instead of putting it towards product development and R&D.

Apparently logos are a Picasso or something? General Motors executive director of Global Industrial Design, Sharon Gauci:
"The underline of the 'm' connects to the previous GM logos as well as visually representing the Ultium platform [GM's tech that powers electric vehicles]. And within the negative space of the 'm' is a nod to the shape of an electrical plug."
"The new GM logo features a colour gradient of vibrant blue tones, evoking the clean skies of a zero-emissions future and the energy of the Ultium platform. The rounded edges and lower-case font create a more modern, inclusive feel."

Sorry... but Tesla is kicking your EV ass and a new logo doesn't make up for a bungled EV business plan, Nikola included.

LMAO. I swear, these people just like to say words. Relating to GM: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/renewable-energy/gm-battery-chemistry-pending-breakthrough/

Also, that logo looks like they used one of those default color gradients from Word 2003.

The tradegy of Merck's logo is amplified when you consider their original logo they had from the 1500's until mid-20th century:

I wonder how much they paid for those logo redesigns. Multi-million dollar companies, graphics arts departments, maybe external consultants? Revisions, etc. Do you think crowd-sourcing a new logo or doing some kind of competition would have allowed a better logo for a fraction of the cost? Check out these premade logos for National Instruments with keyword "tech":

https://www.brandcrowd.com/maker/logos?text=national+instruments&SearchText=tech&LogoStyle=0&LogoLayoutOrientation=&Colors=&FontStyles=

I can understand rebranding logos if the font looks antiquated, or maybe message it sends no longer jives with corporate attitude. For example, NI looks like it has a blue "American Eagle" as part of the old logo shaped like an "N". Are they trying to move away from that image to a more generic global one, or using the green to show environmental awareness? The new logo also is smaller, takes up less space and looks "cleaner". I understand why they would want to change it... I'm surprised it took so long.

Yeah, I mean I don't think companies shouldn't rebrand, but kind of nauseating to see yet another company fall to the whole Silicon Valley/iPhone app logo aesthetic. Also, seems like NI is sort of whitewashing themselves in a way. They are still heavily involved in the US defense complex, so honestly the eagle kind of makes sense.

Though, I don't really think defense is even their #1 industry at this point, and as noted, for better global outreach, probably in their favor to lose the 'merican eagle.

Let's rename our meter so people will buy it, rather than addressing the problems.   Which one would have really cost more?   Changing the product name rather than stepping up, sure that gives me the feeling of quality.

I didn't realize their logo was an eagle in the first place. I thought it was just another bird. In China NI is also referred as the bird brand, and PXI/PXIe mainframes are also referred as bird chassis.

BTW, the new logo kinda looks like it comes from Minecraft.

Lol. I didn't notice it was an eagle until like 3 years ago.

After a few hours of thought, I think it's really just the choice of color which really doesn't sit well with me. If you use the new logo with the old blue, it's not that bad. Still completely devoid of character, but that's par for the course.

Did they change their name too? It seems they are no longer named “National Instruments”. I’ve been using labview for 18+ years, never noticed the bird (eagle) on the logo until you guys brought it up  ;D

Yes now they are just "NI". Not sure how that helps them, other than sounding less like some old school, state-funded entity. (I'm not sure that's really the vibe it gives off, anyway?)

At least with "National Instruments" you 100% knew what company someone was talking about. Now they're two letters. But hey, GM is two letters too, so, maybe it'll stick.

I like the new logo better, but not the colour scheme. The old one is too busy.

Right - according to Wikipedia the CEO motivated the name change by saying that they are bigger than national now and make more things than just instruments. Each page on ni.com is still copyrighted (c) 2021 National Instruments at the bottom, though...
