I also want to add that while his soldering technique is kinda lacking, his joints still look okay to me.

Just barely. His wire tinning is poor, and the sheer amount of time he takes is sufficient to damage components and PCBs.

He seems to be a bit confused...but parts of the video will help some people. I used to play guitar and when  I could care less about where the sound came from. That was many years ago. I now understand some of the processes that are involved with makeing analog signals into pleasing noises. That said  for a fella that just just wants to put a new pot in his axe....this would work. Should a person go out and buy a 300 $ soldering station to weld 1 component? The guy made a bunch of mistakes but hell he give it a shot.

You don't need a $300 station to do it right.

You do need to know how to do it right, and this guy doesn't. But he shouts out to the world that he does and deletes any comment which dares to dispute that.

And doing it right should include knowing the difference between soldering and welding.

Yes, well..

If you want to make a video about solder? and its component makeup then do it. But no one will care.

As I pointed out to him, some of us do actually respect and desire knowledge. He deleted that particular comment.

you'll find these crancks all over the guitar scene.

gibson wanted to update the electronics in guitars and switched to pcb cue a huge uproar were people claim pcb worsen the tone, these are the same idiots who will pay thousands for some oil capacitors from the 50's.

Soldering vs. Welding? I suppose that is the same as welding to braising. ....it all boils down to joining two things. I still say the guy might have helped someone a little.
I would never use a tip like that but I don't have to. I can use state of the art crap now

There's a fairly big difference between welding and soldering/brazing. Soldering/brazing are somewhat similar as you're not really melting the base material of the two parts in question (I definitely don't want to be melting my IC leads to a PCB board). As far as I can understand the distinction between these two is a bit fuzzy and is somewhat defined by temperature, but then again I don't really have a solid understanding of the brazing process.

Welding on the other hand requires sufficient penetration in the base material of both parts in order to form a proper joint. It's possible to get parts to somewhat stick together using only filler materials, but you'll have a terrible joint which has very little mechanical strength compared to a proper weld. In certain circumstances it's possible to get a fantastic weld without using any extra filler material.

ecat, that sounds wonderful. We should all start saying soLder. "Sodder" sounds absolutely idiotic.

Webster's lists silent l as the primary (us dictionary) pronunciation with pronounced "l" as the British variant.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/solder

So it would seem in the US the proper pronunciation is sodder.

My parents still have the table with the 30+ year old soldering iron burn on it.  I wasn't skinned, alive, however.

Easy to repair by drilling out and inserting a plug. (I was skinned, that's how I know :-DD)

I must admit, I was a bit disappointed with this one on TWIT http://twit.tv/show/know-how/7 It was on Youtube, but their stuff gets taken down all the time.

Maybe I should do my own rather that bagging everyone else...

My videos have been nominated for the award!
Everyone has their own opinion of course, and some of them think I have no place making such shockingly incorrect soldering videos  ::)

I come to think that the better someone is at doing something, the sloppier he does things. At the same time, he can drive a cheap car as if he was driving a luxury, sport car.
