On perceived "lag" of latest video homepage update
« on: November 27, 2011, 09:40:35 pm »
So this has been bothering me for quite some time now, but there appears to be some sort of update "lag" of the homepage whenever a new video is posted. The Episodes List seems to be consistently up-to-date whereas the homepage won't update until the next day or so...maybe longer, but I haven't exactly been counting.

The first pic below is of the Homepage; notice episode #220 is on top.

The second pic is of the Episodes List with the latest episode #221.

Is the homepage setup to update based on some sort of scheme where Australia time is global or something like that? Australia is 16 hours ahead of EST so it's a blind guess. Or does Dave simply not update the homepage as often? I don't know how many times it's been like, "WTF?! When did Dave post a new video??" during social BS hour in the lab. =\

my understanding is that this is motivation for you to subscribe to his YouTube channel and get videos that way. (even though the YouTube subscriptions don't work half the time)

I subscribed quite some time ago. E-mail time hack for latest Youtube digest is a little over an hour ago. Meh. =\

Correct. I'm just a slack-arse.
Actually, there is a technical reason for that.
I have to upload to Youtube first because I need the embedded tag for the site, so I can't get that until it's uploaded and processed.
I could hide it private first and then wait and then update both youtube and the site at once, but Youtube has bugs that has prevented that in the past. I could also time schedule updates on both sites, but that's just too much trouble. And in both cases, everyone would get the video later than they currently do. At least now, people watching Youtube or the Episodes page (autogenerated) get the video first
I usually finish my renders at night, so I like to simply leave the video uploading to Youtube and go to bed, and then read the comments in the morning.

Dave.
