According to some seemingly arbitrary, fluid set of "rules", one "isn't allowed" to post off-topic in "general chat" - inherently an off-topic area, unless someone decides you're suddenly allowed to (COVID has literally NOTHING to do with engineering, and is equally as off-topic as threads I've started).

So okay, if this off-topic area isn't off-topic approved... where IS; do you change the "rules" depending on who's posting or on your mood?

:/

Don't shoot me down, it's a sincere and honest question.

The rules are there. This one seems most appropriate.
5) This is an electronics forum, so try to stay on-topic. We understand that threads drift off-topic, but try not to start deliberately and grossly off-topic stuff.

Lots of borderline topics are started and you just need to sit back and go with the flow. Because the rules are only occasionally enforced you need to lurk a bit to get the "vibe".

I'm posting on an electronic device to a forum hosted on electronic devices; I think I'm fine.

Hi, consequences of covid DID HAVE MUCH to do with engineering. Remember how it started as a prolonged chinese new year festival and people went around screaming because new orders from china wouldn't be accepted? Then how it changed the way most of us work? Then how it is changing the job situation for many people?

i personally found your last couple of threads to be useless "abe simpson style"  ranting

there is off topic and off topic. you really need to get the vibe

Agreed.

I don't want this forum to descend into being anything like Farcebook or Twatter. General rants are actively welcomed there.

I didn't report the recent music rant, preferring to limit myself to making that comment. Having skimmed some of the threads eti has started recently, I may make a different choice in the future.

There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

You posted a thread titled "Modern "music" is shite"
and gems like:
"Can't stand "banter" - esp the dimwit kind"
"Retail products (food, consumables) qty shrinking, price THE SAME! (no surprise)"

Please stop it, we are not going to let this forum turn into a general chat forum, I've seen good forums destroyed by this.
And those with a history of starting off-topic threads get clamped down harder on.

I followed Simon's lead and had a read of some of your posts.  This one made me chuckle....

You know absolutely nothing about me or my true views

We have seen this many times before and the reactions you get from "grumpy, miserable, nit-picking old gits" are a direct response to how you present yourself.  Your words reveal quite a bit about you - more than you realise and most certainly more than you would ever care to admit.

I'll leave you to object, but I'm inclined to agree with this:
Maybe your just not into electronics really.

(... and for the life of me, I can't seem to find a passive-aggressive, permanently disgruntled Brit Aussie emoji)

Yes. Let's hope the message sinks in.

BTW if you have such an emoji of a Brit, please post it. If I like it I might start using it :)

I'll be the first to admit I like a good rant, and then reflect back upon them later, thinking "why didn't I just say nothing?"

I am very much "into" electronics; if you have some way of guauging the interest level of total strangers, maybe you could make some money by patenting it; marketing folks would pay handsomely for it. :)

Sorry for the sporadic, nonsensical mind-dumps; I shall endeavour to curb them!

Fair, and I am sorry for polluting - you make good points. I hope you don't hold it against me :)

I am pretty sure Dave would be the IDEAL candidate for such an emoji; I am sure he would be proud to know his charicature had made it into the emoji character set, as "Grumpy Aussie". Not that he is PERMANENTLY disgruntled, but he blows off steam quite a bit, is quite well known, and ... well, why not!
