Title: Nutcases
Post by: PsychoMaster on September 20, 2015, 09:38:29 pm
I use an old Windows XP computer for the few Windows programs I have and  need Java jre 6 .Oracle insist on me registering before they'll hand it over which means them demanding my home and work phone number apart from all the usual questions !
My boss would just love that , are they mad?
Am I being discriminated against because I have an old pc because they don't ask if you can use their latest version. I did have it on cd but it has died with age so I'll have to look else where. After giving it away for years they start this crap. What happens after you start handing out personal details to people who promise not to band it about?

Clearly you are being personally discriminated against.  :-DD

Take an Uber ride then you will not have to worry about having ANY personal information left.  If you do not believe me read this

https://www.uber.com/legal/privacy/users/en (https://www.uber.com/legal/privacy/users/en)

Pay attention that they take your contact info and log info.  In other words they suck everything off your phone.

So if you have ever used Uber you do not have to worry about Oracle.

As far as such nonsense is concerned, I am John Smith, Living at No1 London, W1A 1AA and my email address is no@no.no.

Just 'cos they ask for your details, does not mean you have to give them *real* details!  101 Internet Survival..

If you need to use a real email address to confirm registration, go to mailinator.com or similar throw-away email address provider.

Why not just put down fake numbers?
You can use reserved area codes for television, for example 555 in most places.

This is why I keep installation files for everything, including old versions of software.

I've uploaded JRE 6, Update 27 to Dropbox for you: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/88706859/jre-6u27-windows-i586-s.exe

I'm old and not clever at this internet stuff , and telling fibs didn't a cure to me.

Yes, Like 555-867-5309

That number (in all area codes) is supposedly off limits for use by anyone. If you know those numbers, and why they are so memorable, then you know why telephone companies have stopped using that number.  So that number is a fake one, regardless of area code you are in. (for US anyway)

I always give fake info too. If they want an email to send unlock code or download link, I just make a new one and delete it after I get what I want.

Donald Duck is my favorite name and I have a throwaway Yahoo address just for that purpose.

I don't get anything like that here, just click an 'accept licence' radio button, click a link, and download :/

I also image every disc that comes with any product. Don't forget to PAR2 all the things you store long term! NTFS is not reliable against degradation.
It's a pain when your iso, zip or archived exe is corrupted.

Speaking of unrealistic expectations...
(I couldn't find a better place to put this. Kind of fits here. Good for a laugh.)

Edit: Ah, apparently it was a joke by Belgian firemen. Temporarily closed rail line, no chance of a train. Still pretty funny.

Not just NTFS but the same could be said for all popular file systems! I always have 2 backups!

Always useful to check bugmenot.com for login credentials first. If that doesn't work, use a mailinator.com e-mail "account" for registration. Always select a country where it's unlikely they have address or phone number validation, like Nigeria, Somalia etc. Also name yourself Sodoff Sillyform  or something similar.
