--- Quote from: Howardlong on February 05, 2021, 07:14:22 pm ---I bit the bullet this last week and rebuilt my FS VR rig, from an i7 8700K + RTX 2080ti to an R7 5600X + RTX 3090. Stunning performance compared to the old rig.

They actually sell 3090 in UK? It's just vaporware here.
Cheapest RTX 3090 here is 2200 EUR (that's 2650 USD) for a card with the MSRP of 1500 USD. No thanks.

eBay. My card MSI Trio Gaming X was almost exactly local MSRP (GBP1799 inc VAT, I paid GBP1800 inc shipping on eBay).

That was not before having to reject an eBay chancer who invented some unacceptable Ts & Cs (no returns, forfeiture of  eBay & Paypal buyer protections): he could have sent an empty box under those terms.

You guys have problems... over here, I have had about 1 in 3 orders cancelled and 1 in 3 adding a delivery surcharge.  Brexit and the NI Protocol has retailers and couriers confused.

Anything delivered by Amazon themselves works fine.  Ebay orders are very hit and miss.

Seller can invent whatever bullshit terms he/she wants. Does not matter to ebay/paypal a dime.

The seller cancelled the transaction as I refused to acknowledge his Ts & Cs were enforceable.

In other news, when I'm not in VR flight sim, that 3090 is making about $300/mo in Eth mining - I'm seeing 123MH/s.

It renders 4k60p video at about 2.25x faster than real time, about twice as fast as I was managing before.

Regarding the 65W TDP 5600X, it's tuned up very nicely too, even in the small form factor case.

Mobo is Gigabyte X570 I Auros with a newly released F33a BIOS that includes extra Precision Boost Overdrive 2 (PBO2) settings introduced in AGESA 1.1.8.0. allowing some extra tweaking.

FWIW, the settings I tweaked: Drop PCIEx16 to Gen 3.0 (due to riser), select XMP Memory profile (32GB RAM is 2 x 16GB 3600MHz CL16 dual rank), PBO set to Advanced, negative 20 all core curve optimization, PPT 540, TDC 300, EDC 360 (these 3 fudge factors were copied from Ryzen Master's suggestion), and +150MHz CPU Boost clock override.

This peaks the core clocks at 4.8GHz in limited threads or short time bursts, with the curve optimization reducing power consumption to keep the thermal envelope reasonable.

Some pretty impressive synthetic benchmarks:

--- Code: ---             Single/Multi
CPUZ 1.95      655 / 5175
Geekbench 5   1649 / 9150
Passmark      3609 /24146
Cinebench R15  261 / 1974
Cinebench R20  616 / 4583
Cinebench R23 1589 /11604

--- End code ---

In single core it's around 30 to 40% faster than the 8700K it's replacing (both are 6C12T), and 25 to 60% faster in multi core depending on the synthetic test.
