Yep.... Saw the drones.

First as an oversize 3D snowboarder above the ski slope and then as the Olympic rings - and rock steady, too!

Great implementation of swarm tech.

.... and they looked just as steady in the live feed.

1200 drones ... a Guiness record.

All that effort, and they didn't do it in colour?  :-\

There's no pleasing some ....

Maybe they were so tied up getting the swarm right, they didn't even think of colour ... or perhaps there may have been brightness/balance issues with colour.

Apparently it was faked.

Cute. That video can't be watched in the US. Restricted by uploader.. I'll hop on a vpn in a bit and check it out.

Intel apparently had wind and temp concerns so it was prerecorded. They prerecorded last year st the super bowl, also.

Most people don't realize it's become fairly common to mix pre-recorded footage or CGI with live footage real-time nowadays. Sometimes it's fairly obvious, like when they project in lines on a field or advertisements in places where they would normally obstruct things, but sometimes it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it.

I believe it was filmed in December when the opening ceremony downhill footage was filmed.  Intel claimed they had unexpected last-minute “logistical challenges” that required they scrap plans for opening night drones, according to an internet news source (haven't found it on Intel's site).

added - wind and temp would certainly qualify as a logistic challenge !

That could mean anything from high wind gusts to being veto'ed by big-wig security.

If your airspace has thousands of authorized drones that you can't shoot down, how do you detect and stop an unauthorized drone in time? I'm sure stuff like that gives the Secret Service nightmares.

Does anyone know where I can find out more about how they do this. I am not even sure what search terms to use to get past the mass market publicity stories.
Use the word "swarm" in your searches - like "drone swarm technology"

Edit:  You might want to be sitting down when you start reading about some of the applications - especially military.

In part of the footage I saw a couple "extra" drones. I wonder if they form part of the formation control system or they were just camera platforms.
Not necessary for a control system - except perhaps for human monitoring.  My bet is for camera platforms.  There are a couple of shots where it is obvious the camera is on one of the drones, travelling on it's own "cinematographic" flight path.  There is also a shot of one of the snowboarders where you can see a camera toting drone hovering in front of them.

Pre-recorded indeed but if you look at the current weather conditions with strong cross winds that was definitely a good decision.  I think it's awesome!  :)

Yup I was somewhat there to see some testing. Although not 100% confident if related. There is a campus owned by HCC off of TX-288 South of Reliant/NRG stadium. Regularly drove by because I live South of Houston and work at the TMC. Saw a drove flashing Red, White, and Blue doing various maneuvers over the campus sometime in 2016. These are well prepared in advance to make sure nothing goes wrong.  ;)

On a side note: As for the fans..... HOLY CRAP :wtf: WTF is wrong with them? They managed to trash our parking lot with so much garbage and move a 700Lb stone bench in the middle of the lot.  :o  :palm: I have various pictures of that mess but couldn't take the drone pix (don't want to contribute to our infamous highway accident stats now do I?)
