One-off kit interest?
« on: December 29, 2012, 09:25:39 pm »
Just thought I'd check here. I'm designing a headphone amplifier for myself (mostly just for the fun of it), and I'm going to have some extra parts and PCBs left over. If I offered them for sale as kits pretty cheap on here, would anyone be interested?

  • Flat (within 0.5dB) response 8 Hz - 100 kHz
  • 1/2W into 54 Ohms (maximum for my Sennheiser HD-380)
  • DC-coupled (so decent frequency response into different impedances)
  • SPICE shows negligible THD, but I don't have a reliable way to measure it in the real-life circuit.
  • Short circuit-tolerant (ideally indefinitely, but not tested yet)
  • One PCB per channel, requires an external ±20V supply (I am putting together a 16-30V input flyback converter for this and can give a schematic and layout, but will not have PCBs available and it calls for a hand-wound transformer)
  • All surface-mount (except a couple bipolar electrolytics - they're kind of expensive in SMD), no smaller than 0805
  • All components included except stereo potentiometer (these are a bit pricey and I figure lots of us have one rolling around somewhere) - any value down to 1k, and power supply. If everything you will use to feed the amplifier has an output level control the pot could easily be omitted.

I don't have much more information right now, including the expected cost, but assuming it's decent would anyone bite? Remember I'm not trying to make a complete, fully supported kit and sell a whole bunch, I'm just going to have extras left over and will be able to sell four or so. I can at least assure you that it works - when I have it all complete I can provide schematics, PCB layouts and scope screenshots to anyone interested. I know most of the people on here aren't really into audio, but it's worth a shot  :)
