Open Circuits The Inner Beauty of Electronic Components
« on: June 10, 2022, 01:57:25 pm »
Just came across this book with some awesome cross-section pictures of electronic components
https://nostarch.com/open-circuits

The writers (Windell Oskay and Eric Schlaepfer) even share the first chapter as a demo:

They used a slow speed saw. You can see it in the video too.

Here is how they did the book Open Circuits

I love stuff like that.

Something i rarely do, but otherwise i would likely forget: I preordered the book on amazon.
Ordering directly at Nostarch is just not viable in Germany.

One of the first things I did when I got access to a small xray machine is to xray every type of electronic component I had on hand. It's not quite the same as actually sawing one in half, but it's non-destructive and shows much the same thing.

Did you actually watch the whole video? They make clear that most of it is sanded, not sawed. And they show both.

My copy arrived a couple of days ago.
What a great book :)

One component that stood out for me, for some weird reason, was the carbon composition resistor. So damn obvious, but it never really clicked for me. Now i also understand why these are so unstable.
