Open Season on Nerds
« on: February 15, 2017, 01:54:49 pm »
Well a day later I have emerged from my shell hole still dazed and confused by events of the last 24 hours and this time I’m not referring  to my latest  hallucinogenic  binge off flux removal spray and contact lubricant. I am in fact talking about the annual nerd slaughter better known as Valentine’s day.

It started last year when I changed the habits of a life time and decided to splash out and buy my girlfriend a valentine’s day card and some flowers. Nothing too extravagant you understand we are still just in the early part of our relationship having been together for just 18 years I did not  want to come on to strong.

Well apparently, I did something wrong as my girlfriend had decided not to get me a card and apparently my gift made her feel bad and that was obviously my fault. This year I did not get her a card, but she bought me card and some chocolates. Again she still felt bad because I had forgotten to get her a card etc.

So I went out from work during my lunch hour to the petrol station and bought one of the nicest of the few remaining cards  they had left and some flowers costing over almost £4,  Again she was not very impressed by my belated valentines card and in her words really crap and tasteless flower arrangement.

I cannot say I was very impressed with the gift she got me and would have been much happier with a another can of flux removal spray as I do seem to get through that stuff.

Now I’m dazed and confused already worried about next year.

Someday a nerd just cannot get a break.

Any Idea for next year ?
 :( :( :( :( :(

My wife and I talk about what we are going to get the other person for holidays. The discussion goes something along the lines of hey how much are you spending or how many things are you getting, etc... A little communication about expectations goes a long way to prevent incidents like op describes. That being said a surprise is good from time to time  8).

I told my girlfriend last year that it was just another day. She didn't take too kind to that.  :-//

I never am not girlfriend and  i have not many experience but i give  the feeling that his girlfriend would had been more happy if you had gone her to dinner on a restaurant.

Now ,i have never understand the gift issue between the couples, i have always considered it like the payment for been together.

You don't attempt to go to dinner on valentines evening unless your idea of a good time is standing in line waiting for a table for two hours :)

Depends where you go, I got right in to one of our favorite places. Service was a tad slower than usual but the dog show was on some of the big screens.

Speaking of, right when they first put out all the cards and gifts, I saw what I knew I had to buy - a stuffed Pug dog in a Cupid outfit, that plays music. Of course that was like the day after New Year so I didn't immediately buy it. Came down to teh wire and - damn, sold out at all the local stores. Amazon Prime to the rescue, found TWO in stock, ordered friday, delivered monday. Safe.

Set it out on her desk after I got up, before she did. She walks in and sees it and starts laughing, goes over to her file cabinet, and pulls out the exact same thing she got for me. Luckily I also had the gold dipped rose I get every year - local jeweler makes these and has a new one every year - instead of regular flowers that die in a couple of days, I've been getting her one of these every year we've been together. Not horribly expensive, but they look awesome and, unless you toss them around like a football, last forever.

Yes, we have a pair of Pugs (real ones, as well as stuffed - actually there are a ton of various size stuffed pugs all around the house). Love the silly little things. Just wish the one wasn't such a bed hog. The physics of Dog do not obey the normal laws and I would love to have seen Fenyman explain this one - how an ~17 pound dog can shove a 300+ pound guy out of bed.

After 18 years you should've learnt, it's not what you give....it's how it's wrapped.  ;)  >:D

You can cover multiple bases and solve multiple problems with a gift that has many qualities:
1. Substitutes for going out to dinner.
2. A reasonable alternative to chocolates and flowers.
3. A good option as a hallucinogenic.
4. Can be applied for other occasions: birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc.
5. May work well as flux remover.
6. May work well as flux for all I know.

A nice bottle of Whisky!

Yeah, but that's 119 Dog-pounds.

Well I'm surprised, you say how much experience you have or how long you have been together, YOU are all missing the point,
it does not matter what worked last year or yesterday or worked for this guy or that guy,
YOU will never get it right it will always be wrong YOU are not in control SHE is, you are a male, so suck it up, do as you please,
and accept that at any moment it could all go to sh#t, once you realize that many of your mental illnesses will vanish.  :-DD  :-DD  :-DD

Meh, change your girlfriend!

I just buy my wife a card (at least 2 or 3 days before the event!) and some choccies and some flowers.  I usually end up spending around £20.

Show some willing, you can't just hand the stuff over, you have to look interested!

Sometime you just have to put it down as Mars is for men and Venius is for women. I learned
that lesson with my starter wife.  :-DD

Serious tip: buy her flowers out of the blue, for no good reason (<<-- important - do not expect something in return). Do this a few times during the year and Valentine's day becomes a softer response.
Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.

Unless she is allergic to air as SWMBO is.  I'm diabetic and she is borderline, so chocolates are out.  We made a nice dinner at home for the 2 of us.  A perfect way to spend the time together.  I do take time every day to thank her for all she does for me, how much I appreciate her and love her.

Random flowers are dangerous! (What are you covering up?  .....)

The whole secret is to show her you care.  Part of which is paying enough attention to her to know what she wants.  And always remembering that if there is something hanging between your legs you are wrong.

See also, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

You just have to face facts, even if it really is something SHE did wrong, it's STILL your fault.

Solder her a blinking led heart :-X  :-/O

How about you throw some pans on the fire, and cook? I'm sorry for stereotyping, I assume she cooks? ;-)

Cinema tickets ?

Classic Concert  Tickets?

If that ain't working, a Tektronix 485 (wrapped) should do the job.
