It's amazing that quite a few solutions they developed for this rocket are still relevant and widely used today. It's even more amazing they did all that without computers, a sound grasp of the fields it involved or even basic telemetry data of their flights. Not only had they learn things the hard way, it also meant what could be learned from failure was limited. Truly an incredible endeavour, no matter how unpleasant its purpose.
