This was not animal abuse, it was using animals in place of humans for a specific scientific purpose and then making good use of the results.
Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks.

They are still being conducted today, they have become better at hiding them.

perhaps we as a species don't deserve to thrive and populate this planet after all.
