I don't even bother leaving the house. It's utterly pointless. I guess I must be one of the last few, but there's never been anything that is such an awesome deal that I MUST have it immediately and would make me line up the night before. OH look, a 60" flatscreen TV for $300 - yes, but it's a shit brand which you will be able to get for $350 after the holidays. I REALLY want to do what you see posted on Facebook as a fake story - dress up in a bear costume and go bang on some tents of the people camped out at Best Buy.
Even MORE disgusting are those stores that open on Thanksgiving day. But I blame the sheeple who actually then go out shopping, in numbers large enough that these companies see enough revenue to offset the bad publicity they get for making their employees leave their families and come to work on a holiday. This garbage will not stop until peopel stop being such idiots. And that will happen exactly never.

We celebrated Thanksgiving on Saturday as some of the family coming worked.  SWMBO and I decided to go to Walmart on Thanksgiving to get the grocery shopping done and clean the house on Friday.  Halfway through the shopping list, we both just looked at each other like, 'why did we think this was a good idea?'  Luckily, the shopping took long enough that they were taking down the cattle pen directing tape and checkout was almost immediate.  I was concerned while shopping that the frozen items would be defrosted before we finished checking out.  I must confess that I almost bought a PNY 32 Gb flash drive for $5 out of an isle display in the grocery department.

I avoided it, saw the exact same monitor I bought ( actually a 20in TV set, but it is a monitor now with a remote attached) for a lot more than I paid 2 weeks ago. Was not going to go into any mall or shop at all, nope, never again.

I feel sorry for the employees that have to deal with that crap.  They just don't get paid enough for that.

The thing that gets me is these sales tend to last for most of the holiday season, it's not like Black Friday is the only time to get a deal lol.  I tend to only buy stuff that I had already in mind.  Like I've been thinking of going with a single 4k monitor instead of a triple monitor setup, and 4k monitors have decent deals going on now, so I might splurge and get one but I'll probably wait till Boxing Day.

Earlier this year a big chain of warehouses went belly up in the NL. When they opened for the last time to sell off what was left people where also crazy to buy whatever they could. IIRC the discount was only 30 of 40 percent which is less than what you get from a normal sale. The whole idea of buying stuff for a low price drives some people completely nuts. However if you keep your head cool you can find much better bargains.

Math is hard, big numbers make people just giddy. We've had stores go out of business, they sell off everything for 20% off - the original price. Say $100. 3 weeks ago when the place was still in business, they had the same item priced at $90 with a 15% discount on top. No one bought it. Another store did away with sales altogether and just put a lower price on everything. They had to walk that one back pretty quick, people would rather shop when the price is $100 with 15% off than just pay $80 with no discount shown. I'm sure there are psychological explanations for all this.

But really, when they total up the 'savings' at the end of the bill and all people do is crow about how much they saved..  :palm:  Yes dear, you saved $100. But you SPENT $1000 to do it.

I think part of it is the marketing too "WOW!  Great deals, limited time, come quick!" gets people going.   Would be an interesting experiment to have a city that has two stores that are the same, one advertises a huge deal, the other just advertises the prices - they both match.  See which one ends up with all the crazies.
