OT: Lost my job today
« on: May 12, 2015, 06:02:43 am »
Just a bit of whining here. I left my full-time position at the library spring 2014 so I can go to school. I moved to a temp status where I work between semesters. When I went today to get put on the schedule for this summer, I was told they don't have budget to hire two temp workers this summer (which is complete BS, I've seen the budget ). I know why they fed me that line, but it's not worth getting into.

Now I've got to go out job hunting. Tomorrow I'm gonna call all the libraries in the surrounding counties, and pray to whatever gods may be that there's an opening. I absolutely kicked ass at my job; I did stuff no one else would or could do. I bent the database to my will and could find anything anyone asked for.

Now I have to subsist on ramen and pasta until I can find a job, because I'm a college student in the US.

Related: does anyone need PCB design or assembly? Will work for food.

It might be worth thinking about what inferences might be drawn by an HR-droid with a stack of CVs in front of them. Something not to say in an interview!

Obviously I have no idea of you or your situation, and it is probably unfair or even unjust - but that's completely irrelevant.

There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
Glider pilot's aphorism: "there is no substitute for span". Retort: "There is a substitute: skill+imagination. But you can buy span".

Dont' know what state you are in but apply for unemployment.  All they can tell you is no.
The day Al Gore was born there were 7,000 polar bears on Earth.
Today, only 26,000 remain.

Like any product, identify your skills and experience- and the things that differentiate you from the other 99%

It won't always get the job, but they'll remember you if the talents are relevant, and come back to you when they need what you have.

Remember to present a kick-ass resume and business card for them to keep handy.

Good Luck!

Hopefully some interviews will open up.

Are there internship programs connected with your school? Those work well to get in the door.

For any interviews, bring show-and-tell. Your source code, documentation, etc. Ideally you can get permission from the library to at least get snippets of what you did. If you do much with circuit board development kits bring those. It doesn't have to work! It serves as a great prop to have a discussion. Then they are talking with you, instead of interrogating you.

welcome to the ranks of the unemployed.  I got laid off in january and have not found a f/t job yet.  my story is quite different; I'm an older guy (over 50) and 'too experienced' for silicon valley companies to want to hire (go figure).

too young is a curse but so is too old.  and too old can often mean 'over 35'.

best of luck in your search.  realize, though, things will get better for you over time.  wish I could say the same for us older guys.

Ashland, KY. Why?

I intend to apply for an internship a Tektronix, but it's only open to juniors and seniors, I'm still a couple years away from qualifying.

I hadn't though about it, but I do have some stuff I did with the kids last summer that I could bring and talk about.

Nah, there's nothing interesting in there. Just book titles and circulation statistics.

Unfortunately, I have a black thumb. The only plant I've been able to keep alive is a cactus.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm off to make a bunch of phone calls.

This isn't fair, but this is likely a factor in why you lost out on being brought back.  Departments using student labor don't like becoming dependent on a single person, and since you showed how awesome you were at the database that may have rattled a decision maker in management who then wished to eliminate the problem.

Good luck in your search, I know when I was back in college, jobs in the library where highly sought after because students could study in between helping people and making rounds, shelving books, etc.
