OT: Post your internet speed!
« on: May 13, 2014, 06:49:34 pm »
So with Dave getting his new internet hooked up, I figured it would be interesting to see what speeds people get around the world, and how much it costs.

You don't have to share the price if you don't want to, of course!

Please tell where you are, post your speed, the speed you *should* be getting, your provider, and how much it costs...

You can use http://www.speedtest.net to test the speed, then use the forum code they provide to post it here.

I'll begin.

UK (Kent) - Virgin Media - Up to 152Mbps - £37.50/month. We're waiting for the upgrade to give the extra 52Mbps, which should be here in a month or two.

My internet floats up and down as it pleases, this is a snapshot taken right now:

I think I pay around USD 40 / month for 25 Up and Down. In reality both Up- and Downstream float all over the place. Anything between 1 to 30 Mbit/s seems possible on both Up- and Downstream.

Moscow, Russia. Local provider with meaningless name, ethernet cable.
100 Mbit/s in, 100 Mbit/s out claimed, about the same real:

About $27 equivalent per month.

I also had a 4G modem with about 10 Mbit/s in, 5 Mbit/s out more or less anywhere in the city (gets it on a good day, but still quite reliable on average) for $40 equivalent, but the battery in it had died twice and it's too much pain to replace for the good it gives me.

Just WHY do they make devices that have to be disassembled entirely to reach the battery?

I get 1Mbps, a neighbor gets 50/30 with a TV/Phone/Internet Bell FibreOp bundle (new service, just installed the cabling a few weeks ago on the telephone poles).   I offered them cash/month to get some of their bandwidth which would offset their monthly cost too (incentive).

They were ready to rent out their bandwidth, but their router is in the basement (where the FibreOp cable comes in, a TV and computer wired to the router and using WiFI for their phone and 2 other TVs in the living room and bedroom) and from just across the street I get no signal from their N router, and they have no intention of moving the router one floor up.  Rats.  50x speed for less cost would have been nice.

Close to Frankfurt/Main, Germany (former Rhein-Main Air Base):
We have a 100/5 Mbit/s connection via TV cable supplied by Unitymedia together with analog TV and telephone flat rate.

Current snapshot while my SWMBO is surfing and I'm watching YT  ;)

I have tested before with something like 97/6 Mbit/s, but it depends on area traffic how much I actually get.

Edit: Tested again on May 18:

Edit: Cost are around 30 EUR p.m., which equals to about $ 41 USD p.m.

At least you're making me feel better with my 62 % slower than the US. However, that feeling was short lived, saturation killed it.

600/800?
Don't envy Saturation, he probably needs 20,000 Tera Bytes of hard drive just to store his downloads.

(got to find some argument to make me feel better)

UK (Notts.) - Me aka Goscomb (80/20Mbps) >=£40.80/m + VPN over Virgin Media (20/feels like IP over Avian Carriers).

I could possibly get a bit more out of it if I wasn't routing it on an Iteaduino Plus using VLANs on the single 100Mbit nic...

The speeds in this threat tick me off so much, that I just asked my provider for the highest speed possibles (105 Down, 25 Up) at my location and also yelled at them for being so inconsistent with the speed. So within 24 hours, so they say, I shall be in a competitive speed tier.

Sweden, I think I pay about $40 USD/AUD for this per month. It should be 100/100, and I've been meaning to call them about this, but meh.. I have to test without having torrents seeding and without my Tor relay first.

There's no data cap btw.

100/6 anytime, anywhere, for 19$ a month.  This, plus fixed phone line, plus digital TV without hd channels for about 35$.
Since I got this plan, they upgraded internet plans and they have a 200/6 for 18.5$ but since i have a 100mbps router, I didn't bother to change the plan.

The main competitor offers  500mbps down / 100mbps in providers network / 30 mbps worldwide for $15 a month   or 1000 / 100/30 for 18$ a month  and you get anything between 300-700 mbps down most of the time but the upload speed is not that consistent, it depends on where you upload and time of day, so for the moment I still like my current provider better, which is rock solid at upload..

Pretty lame ASDL2+. The slowest speed of the forum so far. ????

It was supposed to be 5M/500K $50/mo which is bad on its own, real world is even worst. ????

Hopefully I will be switching to fiber soon.
