OT: What state am I in?
« on: December 30, 2020, 05:13:41 pm »
I ordered my first ever PCB the other day from JLCPCB. Here's the shipping confirmation. I usually have a lousy experience with DHL. Maybe JLCPCB knows something about DHL we don't :) So, what was that state I live in again?

My first elementary school was in (or right next to) Hillsborough!

Wow - that's just another one of those weird coincidences that happen to me.

I grew up in the UK and the guy who sells the cheese in the local grocery store in Hillsborough used to walk down my street in the UK in the 1980s...

It'll probably end up in South Dakota.

Oh, sorry ... it's not in the hands of USPS, so the odds are much better.

I didn't really understand what it was about... Strange address? But you filled out the delivery address yourself. And you can adjust it.  :)
And sorry for my English.

One thing that always irritates me is how people can mess up addresses so badly. The pinnacle (which probably happened here as well) is when you put the information on the supplier's electronic form and somehow the information is changed in the package itself (also electronically filled).

It always gives me the impression that somebody somehow looked at the information and decided "yeah, this person seems to have filled the info in the wrong fields - what an idiot. Let me change this bit, and that bit, and so on.".

It could also be the case where the shipping company's form is also stupid, with fields that are mutually exclusive depending on the country but the employee feels the need to fill all of them - in this case these fields could be State, Province, District, County, City, etc.

This is way worse for countries without ZIP (like Chile) or part of Federal Districts (Brasilia, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, etc.).

Well, it could also be a disgruntled employee...

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

Just be glad you don't live in Georgia. They'd probably send it to the country, not the state.

JLCPCB suggests that you check the sending address. I do not think that someone manually corrects them and passes them, everything comes from the data filled in by the client.

Maybe there are some peculiarities in the American address structure, but I have never had any problems with this, despite the fact that in Russia the address is written as a route, and not vice versa.

However, ZIP will save you, I think.  :)

And sorry for my English.

Hah, that reminds me of a story a teacher at my second elementary school told us...

That school’s mailing address was in Bahama, NC (pronounced “buh HAY muh”, btw). Once, she’d been waiting for an overhead projector bulb to arrive, but it took forever to get there. When it finally showed up, written on the box was “RETURN TO MAINLAND, NOT FOR THE BAHAMAS”.  :-DD

What do you mean “written as a route”?

US format is fairly straightforward, going from most-specific to least-specific:
Recipient Name/Company Name
[company-internal routing info like department, person, or mail stop number]
[Apartment or unit number]
House_number Street_name
City, State ZIP_code
[USA]

Everything in brackets is only as-needed.

So a minimal address looks like:
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave
Washington, DC 20500

I suppose that technically, even the name is optional, but other than junk mail, who doesn’t name the recipient? 😂

It is necessary to read the address in reverse order, and in parts. First you need to find the country at the end, read it, then drive back and read the state, etc. We have a direct order of address, which corresponds to the attachment points of the physical address:
postal code
Russian Federation
[region]
[district locality]
city/town/wilage
street
house
apartment

The reading direction corresponds to the driving route, is't it?  :)

So a minimal address looks like:
101000
Russian Federation
Mosсow
Kremlin
Ded Moroz
 :)

I learned something today!

Seems to follow the same logic as that of a date being expressed as YYYY/MM/DD.

Yes, we write the date according to the degree of importance: after all, more often we need to know the current day, not the year: dd.mm.yyyy

It is strange that in countries with an inverted address and date, the time was not reversed.  :)

Yes, I grew up with the *correct* order as well  :box: . The MM.DD may be explained by the way the English language seems to invert everything (adjective before noun), but I am unsure if other countries have this as well (I didn't look).

I'm pretty sure the US is the only place to do it.

Having lived a quarter of a century in the UK and then another in the US, I just give up when I see dates written DD/MM or MM/DD unless the day of the month >12. I always write dates DD-MMM-YY or DD-MMM-YYYY (e.g., 01-Jan-21), though not always with the hyphens.

I think the Japanese way is the most sensible.

All my nightmare experiences have been with DHL. I won't remind myself of the horrible details :)

Last week I received notification from DHL that boards were out for delivery. I could click the link to authorize delivery without a signature. Since I was going to be home all day I authorized it as DHL always rings the doorbell when they make a delivery. Porch pirates aren't bad in my neighborhood.

At 3 pm I checked status and saw it was delivered at 12:50 pm. I had just looked at the front porch 5 minutes before and package wasn't there. When I looked at the proof of delivery photo I recognized the door mat as my neighbors. I went next door and got my package.

I called DHL to complain. I asked the person speaking broken English where their drivers went to school to learn to read numbers. He said someone would call me back within 6 hours. I never got a call. Next day I get an email asking how their delivery service was. I rated it a zero and told them they delivered the package to wrong house and if I hadn't recognized the door mat my package would have be lost forever. Not really true as neighbor is a good friend and she would have brought it over. I never received a call or another email from DHL.

No more authorization for DHL to deliver without signature. The drivers can't read house numbers. All the house numbers in the neighborhood are clearly marked with large 5 inch numbers on the very front of the houses.

As a seller of things on t'internet, you would be surprised the number of people out there who have trouble with knowing their own addresses.

Wrong post code
Wrong suburb
Wrong number
Incorrect spelling
Wrong town
Non-deliverable address
Old address they don't live at any more
Address they never lived at

and of course the classic "I'm not rural (but I am)" address.

It is quite frequent that I have to resort to detective work, and google maps to actually interpret what their address should be when the national postal system's address lookup can't find it.

I think it's just a matter of tradition. Once, someone without thinking decided that it was so good, it spread and became common. It doesn't make much sense to change this because many people will become unaccustomed. The same is true of the metric system. In Russia, there was previously a primitive system of measuring with bast shoes, hands, and steps, but the moment came when the communists decided to break everything and switch to the metric system. They were not tolerant and did not hesitate to create inconvenience to someone during transition.  :)
And sorry for my English.

You know, we in Russia very often scold the Russian post for slowness and even loss, but our post is very cheap, about 10 times cheaper than DHL. It turns out that expensive delivery does not mean quality. However, I have never had any problems with DHL, FedEx, UPS in Russia they can not leave the parcel on the porch.

But I had a problem with SF-Express delivery - it's not much cheaper than DHL, but slower than regular mail. Usually DHL from China delivers PCB in 4-5 days, SF-Express delivered more than 30 days, besides some strange way through Finland, distorted the Invoice and I had problems with customs.
And sorry for my English.

This is one reason why I prefer military format (01 Apr 1978).  Learned it at Hewlett Packard Australia - their solution to the confusion in date formats.  All our internal software (it was all internal software in 1980) used military format and it just made sense.  That said, the Japanese way does have it's advantages - it sorts properly  :)

I always use ISO format (YYYY-MM-DD) in file names, since an alphabetical sort will be chronological. It makes sense to use it in lots of situations.

No one bothers to store the date inside as it is convenient for sorting, in fact, it is stored as a linear number, but it is shown to the user in a convenient format. Windows, for example, stupidly sorts the date as a string, it's not clear to me.  :)

Yes, we write the date according to the degree of importance: after all, more often we need to know the current day, not the year: dd.mm.yyyy
So the same applies to address format in many countries:

The recipient is the most important
Then the street address
Then the rest

With one exception, all countries that I lived in follow that format. The exception is Russia :)

Most mistakes happen at local post office level. Every once in a while we are getting our mail delivered to neighbor’s mailbox, and time to time they get our mail. I never had an incident with my mail going to a wrong country or state, despite the fact that there are Cambridge towns in many US states, in UK and Australia.
