Title: OT:I need a movie
Post by: smashedProton on July 07, 2013, 05:49:13 am
It's summer and I'm off school.  Parts are going to arrive in a week so I can finish the $%@#$%# 7400 logic project that I started.  In the mean time I'm going to watch movies  ^-^.

Dave introduced me to Wargames, and I have watched it and loved it.  I even watched the sequel.  So now with this post I'm coming back for more  :-+.  Please post your favorite movies and I will watch the ones that I have never seen before.  Thank you!

Given that you've watched WarGames, it's now obligatory that you watch others in the same genre.
Sneakers is a must, as is Pirates of Silicon Valley.
Anti-trust, The Net, and Hackers are reasonable time killers.
And of course the almost real-life war games, Thirteen Days.

Then personally I'd go on an adventure heist movie marathon...

Of course this is all a given that you have watched the BTTF trilogy, Indy and Die Hard Tetralogies, and The Matrix.

Castaway on the Moon is a really great movie. It is Korean and subtitled but believe me you don't need to read it. The acting is phenomenal and story is brilliant.

If you love sci-fi about outer space aliens, my additions for above excellent list.

These alien movies are a bit different than ordinary alien movies which usually with physical form, these are more like a new concept about alien or foreign intelligent things that could do beyond human capability to normally comprehend or cope with them.

- Solaris , starring : George Clooney ..
- Sphere , starring : Dustin Hoffman ..

And nobody mentions 'The good, the bad and the ugly'  :wtf:. I wasn't born when it was made but I think its a very good movie. And how about 'For a few dollars more' and 'Once upon a time in New York' also made by Sergio Leone?

Several of my favorite movies:
- Nikita (the original in French from 1990)
- Chaplin (the biographic movie from 1992)
- Love actually
- Pulp fiction
- RocknRolla
- Snitch
- Lock stock and 2 barrels
- The social network
- The Darwin awards (must see)
- The curious case of Benjamin Button (skip the last 30 minutes)
- The ninth gate
- Constantine
- Tomorrow when the war began
- Yes man save the world
- Plunkett & Macleane
- 2012
- Avatar
- Underworld
- The bourne trilogy
- Inception
- Mesrine Killer instinct & Mesrine Public enemy no1

Usually the movies directed by Clint Eastwood are pretty good. Its amazing how he can use the same character (himself) in so many different movies and situations ;D

There are many other good series too:
- Breaking bad
- Dexter
- Long way round
- Long way down

edit: I totally forgot 'Trainspotting' and 'This is England'

Every now and then I look for movies and series with a high rating on IMDB.com. There are many relatively unknown movies well worth watching.

Ah! I can see several Seventh Art recommendations! Well, I would unreservedly recommend anyone to watch the trilogy The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1132620/), The Girl Who Played with Fire (2009) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1216487/) and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (2009) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1343097/); but I am talking only about the original Swedish films and NOT their lousy Hollywood remakes for mainstream consumption...

Your next mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to watch the Dogtooth (2009) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1379182/) (original name: ?????????? in Greek or "Kynodontas" in Latin characters), which though it is not the most easy movie to watch, it is absolutely a resourceful and honest film. It was a surprise to me because by just watching it you end up living it, even though it is not about your life. What I can only say is that the scenario itself is more than enough for the movie to even need any kind of background brass or stringed musical instruments to drive your emotions to the target levels; this happens naturally by the powerful screenplay and the vivid acting only! No CGI, no viewer conditioning music, not anything --but only a strong, intoxicating and resourceful conception that leaves the spectator with absolutely no answers* in the end. I hope you will enjoy that rare movie as much as I did!

-George

P.S. Since I do not know whether Dogtooth is available in your place for rental or not, feel free to search for it at the torrents world; In this case, I will provide you with the English subtitles file (in .SRT format), attached below. Before using it, please remove the .TXT extension from the file attached.

(*) Question: How many movie titles are you aware of, that were really meant to sharpen your critical thinking? Almost every movie title available, goes through the same pattern: Introducing the problem and serving the solution -either directly or indirectly: Bed time stories for little children... In the long term, you are actually being programmed not to search for the answers, but to wait for them to be served to you. You will need to try really hard to find a title that leaves the spectator (or the reader) with no answers provided, in order to start him thinking.

The Thirteenth Floor

Wow the only other person I've ever heard of that had seen that movie.

It came out around the time the Matrix was out and had some similarities, but ended up being more of a thriller.

Ok well I've seen many of my favorites already. I'm a general fan of submarine warfare movies so I'm glad to see U-571 and K-19 got mentioned.

Another 80s classic I'd say is Short Circuit. As a kid I used to repeatedly watch the opening scene.

Movie Moments - Short Circuit (1986) - Opening (D) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCdtRnu9ggc#)

Anyone able to figure out what model scope was used?

Anyway back tho the list.
Anything that includes Anthony Hopkins is always a good movie:

Freejack - Starring Emilio Estevez, Renee Russo, Mick Jagger, and Anthony Hopkins. (Come on Mick Jagger as the bad guy? You've gotta see that!)
All the Hannibal Lechter movies (Silence of the Lambs / Hannibal / Red Dragon / Hannibal Rising)
Hearts in Atlantis - A Stephen King movie but not the typical thriller, still a really good movie.
Meet Joe Black (A modern interpretation of Death takes a Holiday)
(and other Anthony Hopkins Movies)

Sean Connery:
The Hunt for Red October (my favorite of all time)
Medicine Man
James Bond (just see the whole series)
(And most other Sean Connery movies)

Morgan Freeman:
Bruce Almighty / Evan Almighty - These are just fun movies
Shawshank Redemption
Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider : Morgan Freeman plays the same character in both
(And again most others)

Random movies:
O Brother Where Art Thou?
The Mexican
The Jack Ryan trillogies (Sum of All Fears had Ben Affleck instead of Harrison Ford, but it did have Morgan Freeman)
Wall-E

I'll update this list later as I look through my DVD collection...

Das Boot is one of the best submarine movies (in my list).
I can always watch "We Dive at Dawn" every time it pops up on TV, a wartime submarine film, 1943, so has a wartime feel to it.

I'll confine myself to ten favourites. Not necessarily in order.

1. Blade Runner (make sure it is Directors Cut)
2. Pulp Fiction
3. The Andromeda Strain (1971). This is a great pre cgi SciFi story by Michael Crichton
4. 2001
5. Blues Brothers
6. Silent Running
7. Moon  (this is excellent by any standard)
8. Alien
9. Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy
10. Source Code (also excellent)

I could go on but decided to stick mostly with SciFi.

I just picked up the five disk release of Blade Runner, and there are two versions of the director's cut:

1992 'Director's Cut' by Michael Arick
2007 'Final Cut' by Ridley Scott

Of the known versions, I'm pretty sure I've seen the US theatrical release, and the 'International Cut' which came out on Criterion Edition LD.

I'm looking forward to identifying the differences in the versions.

Also, since you have Alien on the list, you have to include Aliens as well. (Forget the others, there should only have been those two...)

No offence, but was that that hookey nonsense with Clooney’s dead wife recurringly coming back to life in outer space? That was my last straw with Soderberg (or whatever his name is); another trite mystical bore ineffectively given depth with endless boring and protracted takes of Clooney staring silently and vacantly into space.  :P

If you enjoyed Apollo 13, I would highly recommend the 12 hour TV miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon".

Tom Hanks wanted to tell the entire story of the Apollo program, but it was way too much for a single movie. So he took most of his earnings from Apollo 13, and put it into this "labor of love".

Episode 5, "Spider", is a particular recommendation for the crowd on here. It tells the story of the development of the Lunar Module, from the perspective of the engineers at Grumman.

Sounds interesting especially since I grew up with 'space'. My father has worked in the space industry his entire carreer; most of the stuff he designed is 'out there' or has become a falling star.

Why is it that so many of us like submarine warfare movies ?...
maybe because it the hackers idea of war ? (silent hunts)
Anyway... if so many mentioned submarine movies....
And at the same time so many mentioned the comedy movie Airplane...
Have you seen the submarine equivalent comedy Down Periscope (1996) ?

I'm now pissed off at myself.  I don't have cable TV, over the air, HBO etc, so I didn't even know this existed.  Now a two day wait from Amazon for this to arrive.

Thanks for posting about it.   :-+

No problem. I don't have HBO, so I missed the original run as well. I love this series enough to rewatch it about once a year.  The 12 parts break down as follows:

1.) "Can We Do this?"--Covers the origins of the Apollo program, along with the predecessor Mercury and Gemini programs.

2.) "Apollo 1"--Covers the fatal pad fire which killed 3 astronauts, as well as the investigation and fallout from the incident.

3.) "We Have Cleared the Tower"--Covers the rebuilding after the fire, and the preparations and launch of Apollo 7.

4.) "1968"--Covers the first lunar voyage of Apollo 8, against the backdrop of the political upheaval of the time.

5.) "Spider"--Covers Lunar Module development at Grumman, and the LM test flights of Apollo 9 and Apollo 10.

6.) "Mare Tranquilitatis"--Covers the first lunar landing on Apollo 11.

7.) "Is That all There Is?"--Covers Apollo 12 from the perspective of rookie LMP Alan Bean.

8.) "We Interrupt this Program"--The Apollo 13 events as seen through the eyes of a veteran network news reporter covering NASA mission control.

9.) "For Miles and Miles"--Apollo 14 and the career of the commander Alan Shepard, the first American in space.

10.) "Galileo was Right"--Covers the crew training and launch of Apollo 15, the first mission with a heavy emphasis on lunar geology and science.

11.)"The First Wives Club"--Covers the family lives of many of the astronauts, particularly the Apollo 16 crew.

12.)"La Voyage dans la Lune"--Covers the final manned landing on Apollo 17, and the political decisions that killed the program.

that is a lot of time right there...
Stargate SG1: ~152 hours
Stargate Atlantis: ~ 71 Hours
Dexter: ~ 80 Hours
Doctor Who (2005) ~ 80 Hours (a crap load more if from the original series)

the times are approximated from the standard episode length but those 3 alone push 16 full days (though yes i have seen them)

If we're talking TV series, it has to be Tim Hunkin's "Secret Life of machines" series.

Come on...It has to be Real Genius.

Especially if the OP liked War Games

"Dr. Hathaway: When you first started at Pacific Tech you were well on your way to becoming another Einstein and then you know what happened?
Chris Knight: I got a haircut?"
