Title: Oumuamua
Post by: Rick Law on December 20, 2017, 07:35:23 pm
Since we talk about sci-fi a lot, I assume some of you are interested...

Oumuamua - a 400 meter long cigar shape asteroid that recently passed by the Sun, now believe to have an organic material.  (Organic really does not equal life, just stuff that may origin from or stuff life may use.)   When first observed by the Pan-Starrs telescope in Hawaii back in October, some thought may be it was a space ship given the very unusual shape.

Who knows, may be we found the last Jedi's hiding place.

I would rather expect here some real expertise and real photoimages... Never seen any.

It's obviously a dormant Space Kraken passing through our system, or the long dead shell of one.

@Yansy: There's a real picture of the thing: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:A2017U1_5gsmoothWHT_enhanced.jpg Yes, that point in the middle is the best that is currently possible to get from such a small object.

It's never been close enough to properly photograph. We haven't had a chance to send a mission either.

Why would you ever use Breitbart as a source for astronomy news?
Some people consider it a proper news outlet.

Having seen news reports of events I attended, I actually found Breitbart's reporting closer to reality that any of the bigger names.  But, I share your reservation about their assessment of technology/astronomy, and I certainly would not buy a new scope based on a Breitbart review.
