Paypal dispute resolution
« on: April 30, 2020, 01:04:14 pm »
Hi all:
Someone hacked my paypal account was yesterday and the dispute resolution resulted in a decision which did not correct the issue.  Paypal suggested I email the person who my funds mistakenly went to but as of now I have not received a reply.  Can anyone advise me as to how fix this misapplication of my money?

Thanks

Hi Joseph. Sorry to hear about your experience. In order to advise you, it would help to have a little more information. If you could tell more about what happened, and how much money was involved that would be useful. Also where the money went, what country etc. Any information would be useful.

The person who got into your account would have sent the money to themselves, so why would they return it to you?

Hi, this is an update.  Paypal has agreed to look at my claim again.   I suspect this is because the dispute may have been settled without really looking into my claim.  Anyway who knows because paypal doesn't tell why they made the decision.

To answer some questions: The amount was 225.00.  It went to someone called Genemar Booker.  Who knows where this person lives?  The transfer just popped up from nowhere.

To get in touch with Genemar was the first solution paypal suggested to resolve the issue.

Always pay with a credit card on PayPal.   That way, you can contact your bank and get the payment stopped if PayPal is not responding appropriately and adequately.  I have had to resort to that a couple of times, but PayPal has been getting better.

Hmm Joseph. Very weird. Ok so was the money taken out of your bank account or charged to your credit card? If one of these, the charge can be reversed by contacting the financial institutions involved. If it was taken directly from your PayPal account, then you will have to deal with them. One other thing, are you sure money was actually transferred. I have had spam trying to make me believe that I have had a transfer or charge that didn’t actually happen. When PayPal first started they reported they were losing 2 million dollars A DAY to fraud. So they have gotten pretty good at this. Cheers.

Interesting. The only Genemar Booker that showed up in a Google search was an inmate in a New York prison. Might mention that to the PayPal minions.

Thanks Larryc.  The funds in my paypal account came from a gift of a relative.  The information about Booker as an inmate in New York prison will definitely be forwarded to paypal.  As of today I await the decision of paypal.

Thanks.

Here is an update as to why my fraud claim was denied.

Marbie10:31 AM
Upon checking, your case was actually denied since we did not find any inconsistency that your account was hacked.

Just suggest that you keep on sending email on the person that received your payment.

Would there be anything else that I could possibly assist you for today?

Considering you being away from the chat window, I will be pausing this chat. Please resume the chat when you get back so that we can continue the conversation.

Once more: you speak of a mistake, but also of a "hack". Can you perhaps clarify what happened more precisely? Transferring money to the wrong person is not covered.

Can't say if it was a "hack" or "mistake".  What every happened someone called "mookie b" admits getting the money accidentally and then spending it.  I will file a claim with law enforcement if they don't make me whole.

You're being fairly vague about what happened. I don't think you can report a crime unless you're fairly sure one occurred. Transferring money to the wrong person is unfortunate, but isn't covered under Paypal's protections so I can imagine they won't help you. I can only assume they looked into the IP addresses and and login attempts involved and saw nothing out of the ordinary.

Yes that is what happened Mr. Scram.  I wouldn't have any trouble getting law enforcement involved since the person admits they received the money through no action of my own and refuse to return it.  In any event a visit from the police is never pleasant and most normal people don't look forward to that.
