People that are insanely talented
« on: November 17, 2020, 02:22:34 am »
One thing I've enjoyed pretty much my whole life is watching people that are super talented doing what they do.  It almost doesn't matter what it is, when someone is next level at almost anything it's a joy to watch.  I'm no welder, don't have the kit and don't have the skill, but there's a guy that posts videos on YT on a channel called "6061.com"  (https://www.youtube.com/c/6061com/videos) who is some kind of savant with welding and watching him make things is incredible.

So, I have to believe I'm not alone so if anyone has some other channels you can link here please do.

Awesome. I've been lamenting the state of Youtube. It's hard to find videos like these, anymore. I went through a bunch of welding channels a couple years ago, and YT never suggested 6061.

Since you can apparently stand videos without nonstop narration, here's a couple

Woodworking: Young Je. Just some dude making beautiful stuff in a gigantic workshop. And planes. Lots of building custom planes.

Metal fab: The Other Finnish Guy. 1001 things you didn't know you could do with an angle grinder, a stick welder, and a hydraulic press.

Applied Science and Tech Ingredients - interesting projects that often involve scientific principles normally thought to be outside the reach of hobbyists.

Ashley Harwood and Kim Tippin - machining done "the old fashioned way".

glasslinger - DIY vacuum tubes from scratch!

Laura Kampf - lots of woodworking and metalworking.

Micah Elizabeth Scott (scanlime) - very skilled in programming and software hacking.

Naomi Wu (SexyCyborg) - was known for showing off while presenting technical topics, now developing a 3D printer optimized for small scale mass production.

The Signal Path - lots of RF related teardowns and repairs.

Xyla Foxlin - Did all sorts of projects for Beauty and the Bolt, now into advanced woodworking projects like a DIY boat.
Cryptocurrency has taught me to love math and at the same time be baffled by it.

Jeri Ellsworth - from ~0 experience in designing ASICs to the release of the Commodore emulator C64 DTV, in 18 months if I recall correctly.

Seriously impressive, and her YouTube channel is well worth a look although she's been quiet recently.

I think Jeri even etched and baked some diy MOSFET transistors at home on a piece of silicon wafer.

If the OP likes to watch metalworking channels, here are my recommendations:

Stefan Gotteswinter - some serious precision machining
This Old Tony - you won't likely find a more funny machinist. Amazing video production skills and good content.
Keith Rucker - restoration of various old machinery, steam locomotive, steam engines.
Abom79 - The bigger the piece of metal, the better, for this big guy.
Bad Obsession Motorsport - two guys in a garage, building rallye cars with the utmost care for everything. Great video production and lot of jokes everywhere.

Keith Fenner, Turn Wright Machine Works. Very knowledgeable and experienced metal worker doing impressive work on mostly manual machines. No crap background music, no "please share and subscribe" nag, no stupid VPN promotions. Just show of solid machining skills.

Great channel. Loving the oldskool vibe, and Ron is a quirky character, too. So much knowledge of a dying art.

There are some youtube videos of him teaching how to grind and polish your own telescope lenses (mirrors). Inspiring.

Not too much to "watch" but look up Tatjana van Vark.  She must have worked for Marconi or one of the big European defense electronics contractors in the 1960's or so.  Who ELSE would have the entire electronic suite out of a Vulcan bomber in her DINING ROOM?

There is a video of her running a Litton inertial platform and making it recover from a gimbal lock.  There's a panel with dozens of gears that does some kind of mechanical computation that is quite cool.

Lots of crazy stuff there!

All this talk about Glasslinger but no Dalibor Farny? https://www.youtube.com/user/daliborfarny

Check out Sam Zeloof if you like DIY semiconductors https://www.youtube.com/user/szeloof
This dude was already making semiconductors in highschool.

Let me revive this thread linking this https://www.youtube.com/c/TallanPick/featured guy's youtube channel on lock picking. Beware that I'm speaking of lock picking as a sport (locksport), without criminal intent.
...
So we need to demand a collaboration video from him and the creator of this lock:

For machining, Stefan Gotteswinter is high on my list. He's beyond awesome. Abom79 for the hands-on heavy stuff, This Old Tony because the guy is just hilarious . Blondihacks for showing how experience  trumps raw talent.

CuriousMarc is fantastic. His AGC restauration series is gold. Watch it if you haven't already.

Scott Manley for everything I ever wanted to know about space travel

The Signal  Path because it is way beyond my skill level yet cool to watch.

Louis Rossmann for the rants and for showing how to repair consumer electronics at component level.

FranLab for the vintage electronics stuff, not for the whining over YT.

Mark Rober, for the annual Glitter Bomb updates. Not for Team Trees.
Everybody likes gadgets. Until they try to make them.

Sorry, I've completely forgot Clickspring, but his channel seems dead anyway.

It was just on hold; it's back again now. He took a sabbatical to do some academic research into the Antikythera mechanism.
