This would be useful when you live in an old house where the rats and bedbugs etc, live under the floorboards  where you cant get to them, and the insects come into the room through the floorboard gaps....

But Do They Work?

Studies designed to investigate the efficacy of ultrasonic pest repellents have shown mixed results. One extensive test performed by Kansas State University in 2002 found that the devices were effective at repelling some insects, such as crickets, but the same devices had little effect on cockroaches. Ants and spiders were unaffected by any of the devices. Of the pests that seem to be bothered by the noise, some tests have shown that they soon become habituated as they realize the noise is harmless. Even models proven successful in tests are unlikely to perform adequately in real-world situations, where signal strength rapidly diminishes and can be blocked by walls and furniture.

Great product name though -- sounds like a magic spell straight out of Harry Potter. Uttering that spell is probably as effective as using this product.

I've never seen any pests in my house once I got a cat. 

But you do have to feed the cat.  I'd argue it outcompetes the pests in cuteness and only asks for food in return for pest deterrence.

I found two dead mice in my dad's kitchen after he installed a pest-away-device similar to that.  I'm not convinced they work.

If the OP buys one, turns it on and finds it makes him want to leave the room then clearly it works.

Not necessarily. One of our cats will disappear over the horizon if a high-pitched whine, such as from our vacuum cleaner, occurs. In fact, I only have to get the thing out and he's gone, knowing what's coming. Same with the robomower - sits there quite happily sunning himself but as soon as the mower gets going he is gone, and that's a very soothing kind of hum but high-pitched.

OTOH, our other cat couldn't give a toss. So maybe they work on some individuals and maybe they don't on others. Clearly, if the aim is total annihilation then they don't work (and much else wouldn't either), but if you just wanted to show they do work - as in having an effect - then you only need one or two critters to scuttle away.

Neither of those sounds are ultrasonic, and they only work on domestic cats, which can be a pest, but generally don't cause as many problems as rodents and as you say, don't work on all individuals. The OP wants to deal with rats and bedbugs, not the neighbour's cat using his garden as a toilet.
