Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon's 50th anniversary...
For those lucky enough to have a quality LP pressing, or a true non-remastered full dynamic range Toshiba CD version of the album, it is time to find a good quiet hour to enjoy this one...

My personal #1 album of all time.  :-+
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

Most of these old bands celebrate anniversaries of significant milestones in different ways. The Stones celebrated with a 60th anniversary tour. The Shadows did a TV doco. David and Polly celebrated by calling Roger what he is.

Nice. I have it on CD remastered, but also in 24-bit FLAC that was recorded from vinyl. Don't have the original vinyl though.

Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon's 50th anniversary...
For those lucky enough to have a quality LP pressing, ...

Gulp. I do. With the blue pyramids poster.

It is still an excellent way of checking the quality of sound reproduction, since it exposes all sorts of flaws in systems.

Today's yougsters will never understand the first two verses, more's the pity. I contend they would have fewer mental problems if they did. Boredom is a great spur for inventiveness.

Almost everybody will come to understand the final two verses.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

As it happens, I accidentally picked up a copy of the Japanese CD pressing a couple of months ago. It sounds a little less dynamic (in your face) than the standard one, but that's the effect of fitting it into the 16 bit dynamic range without compression.
Best Regards, Chris

One of our "cool" HS teachers had a quadraphonic setup in his classroom...  We used to play the 4 ch version of this album all the time - the sound effects bit in Money is really cool as it spins around the room.  I don't think the overall audio quality of the 4 channel version is as good as the stereo version, but the effects make up for it.

Great album for sure.

Still have the vinyl. Also have "Animals" another good album in my opinion and thought I also had "Wish you were here", but can't find it.

Brings back memories of them "good old days"  :-DD

An original quadraphonic mix.  Now this is a version I would like to experience personally.
Non of this modern 5.1 Dolby garbage.

My close friend, now passed on since June 2019 - Mr Peter Whitehead - was cameraman, friends and flat mate to PF, back in the sixties. He was also tour cameraman for The Stones, friend of Marianne Faithfull and Michael Caine, et cetera. I worked with him and repaired his Macs and PCs, and any other technology he needed maintaining, from ‘99 until around 2015. Lovely chap and very generous with his time and I have many fond memories.

Look for “Tonite let’s all make love in London” - possibly his most well known film. I have a copy but I can’t share due to respect and copyright; you’ll find it elsewhere I’m sure.

That’s my knowledge for the day. Hehe

Yep, it was the go to record, and later CD, for showing off your system. I can also say it's my most purchased recording, I recall at least two LPs, a cassette, and several CDs.

One often overlooked advantage of the vinyl version of any album (except led zep 3 and the stones sticky fingers) over cd,cassette or 8 track is there's a lot more room on the cover to roll up a :cough: cigarette  :cough:

I didn't know that. Shows both good taste and good judgement :)

"Consumer Reports" is leftpondian so I wouldn't have heard about that, especially not in the 70s when comms were slightly slower and more expensive.

"Which?" is the rightpondian version of CR

Since I was a kid, Dark side of the moon was considered a reference test for bass range of speakers..

As a kid about 12~13 started repairing TVs, Guitar amps, stereos, and anything electronic for spending money (sure beat mowing yards and painting houses!!). This carried over while I was in grad school and repaired guitar amps & stereos and such for many of the music & stereo stores in the area as a source of income along with working on university research projects.

One morning 3 English band fellows came in the repair store and asked if I could repair their light show control box. Turns out the PS was blown and I rigged up a PS for US 120VAC use. They were so happy it was fixed they offered me a bunch of front row tickets at the Tampa National Guard Armory shown here.

http://www.scottymoore.net/FtHomer.html

They noted I played guitar (wasn't any good tho), and offered to teach me a couple songs and I could be on stage with them!!

Anyway, I had something else to do that night and didn't take up on the offer.

A year or so later the album came out, and  yes it was the early original Pink Floyd |O
