Pinout of stihl power tool chargers
« on: June 23, 2019, 04:34:28 am »
I got a broken stihl  AR3000 battery backpack, i think the only problem was that one of the four wires going to the connector was not properly connected. I do not own any matching stihl power tools, i do have other uses for a 1148Wh 36V battery backpack.

The backpack can be charged with a normal stihl AL 300 or AL 500 charger which i do not have. I did try to connect an 36V charger to the positive and negative terminals of the battery but it will not charge. It would be good to know the pinout of the charger.

I think one of the other two wires is used for charging but unfortunately the bms in the backpack is potted, and i do not want to connect 36V to it without knowing the pinout...

Cells: Sony US18650NC1
Configuration: 10s22p

I've attached some pictures of this thing...

There is a communication protocol between Stihl batteries and tools.
On the AR3000,  green and yellow wires are used for communication only (as all other batteries)
I also own a defective AR3000 with BMS in fault (4 red LEDs + bips).
18650 are connected horizontally and create 4 groups.
10S per row.
Each of these 4 groups goes to the BMS.

Same observation here : I can not charge using the power ports (Red and black).
The BMS Locks direct charging when in fault.
If you wanna charge anyway you have to feed the cells between left side blue wire (ground) and the 4 right side wires that go to the BMS (each one being 36v).

The AR3000 is 10S11P.

First step would be to check the 10 voltages of each 1S11P assembly. Check if you have a weak element (dead cells).
Unbalanced group may bring the BMS in error.
