Please decide this one for me (multimeter)
« on: April 23, 2014, 06:53:46 pm »
After watching all the reviews, teardowns and tutorials on YouTube I'm down to these three meters. The one that wins the poll will be the one I buy! I just need good DMM that I can trust, something reliable and safe. Sorry for spamming with some more DMM posts, I bet there are thousands of these.

It depends on what you want to do with it.  I'm not familiar with the Gossen, but of the two remaining models:

The Fluke is good for electrician/technican type uses both in the home and for automotive service.

The Agilent is a better choice for an electronic laboratory doing "general electronics" work - the type of stuff Dave does, for example.

$226 - Agilent
$270 - Fluke
$810 - Gossen

Just a quick price search.  I don't know what's in a Gossen but they really, really like their meters.  I'd say go for the Fluke even though I don't have one (I want one, just can't afford it).

My vote went to Fluke, but for the brand, and not that model. So Why 179? Why not the gold standard(87 V)?

Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Sell a man a fish, and you'll both eat for a day.

Just because the Fluke 87-V is twice the price as the 179 here. If you are buying something that expensive you have to get it local (taxes will rape you), so the three choices are within my price range. As a reference:

Agilent: $282
Gossen: $325
Fluke: $375

You didn't specify a Gossen # so I just searched with your text.  Still, they are rather expensive units.

Have you thought about a Brymen that everyone seems to rave about?  I put together a spreadsheet with your Agilent, Fluke 179 + an 87V BM869 and all of the Gossens from the big multimeter spreadsheet that's floating around here that I have a local copy of.  Might this further help your decision?

Gossen is really bad with the naming of their multimeters, as far as I can tell it's named Metrahit 2+, the one listed here: http://www.gossenmetrawatt.com/english/produkte/metrahit2.htm#

Doesn't look like it's easy to get in the states.  Having just put together that spreadsheet and looking at the choices, if I had the money, I'd go for the Brymen.  Good count, comparable specs and pricing overall.  I don't think the Gossen you linked is in that list though so it's not a fair comparison in that regard.

Gossen 2+:
No capacitance measurement, no averaging on Max/Min, no auto hold, worst volt accuracy.

Fluke 179:
Worst battery life (9V battery)

Agilent 1242B:
Better 100nA resolution and 10,000 count, 4-20mA loop, has a PC logging option and internal logging
No duty cycle measurement
