At least the silly cat thread has "cat" in the title, so I can ignore it. "Please Explain" is often a beginner's question about some legitimate topic, where he doesn't know that it's better to title it "Vceo--Please Explain", or similar. |

What is the problem? If you are not interested in the small number of non-technical threads then why don't you just ignore them? Instead you posted a non-technical thread with a cryptic topic in screaming all caps, which IMO adds exactly zero value to the forum. I'd much rather go look at a picture of a cat. |

I think (only *think*) he - GlennSprigg - may may be questioning why the cat thread perpetuates, whilst others like mine, was locked (admin please read carefully - I don't mind that it's been locked - that's your prerogative - :) I've moved on - I am merely clarifying this for James) Dear James, I have noticed that you seem to take great delight in stepping into threads and making judgements on people - you've done it to me, a few times, in a pretty supercilious tone. I might counsel you to not take this too seriously - the moral high ground can be a lonely place, and not one of us is perfect, nor beyond reproach. Are you moderator staff? I don't see why you "care" so passionately as to the flaws and actions of others. Subtlety and context, I hope that makes it clearer. :D Have a nice day my friend. |

The cat topic was started long ago. It's new stuff that is being locked or removed. We came to a point where we had to put the brakes on new off topic stuff. No need for reading between the lines, just a calender! |

--- Quote from: Siwastaja on October 05, 2021, 01:58:24 pm ---I have a vague recollection that even funny and innocent off-topic threads have been removed. To me it seems like regulating the amount of off-topic discussions, by semi-randomly allowing some and removing some. While it feels unjust for those who started the threads that happen to be deleted, it's the right of the forum's owners to use such method and I guess it's the least effort strategy. For controversial or political discussions, the removal threshold clearly is lower, which is what I mean by semi-randomly; there are biases that control the deletion, but the general idea is to keep the amount of off-topic low enough so that people come and stay because of the technical content and not just chat around. --- End quote --- Pretty much exactly this. And as Simon said, some old harmless threads we just let run. It's prettty simple, if we allow anyone to start a new thread on any topic at all then the forum will be filled with off topic threads. It takes just a handful of people to constantly post off-topic thread to ruin the experinece for everyone here and new people joining what they think is a technical forum. Once these people are given free reign they just can't stop themslves. |
