Please, stop using the word "Technology" like that
« on: May 18, 2015, 12:52:37 pm »
I don't know if this is a relatively new fad or I just now became aware of it, but the trend seems to be growing and it is starting to irk me to no end.

So there are several self-proclaimed "technology" websites, blogs or Youtube channels. However 99% of them are exclusively doing tablet and smartphone reviews and pretty much nothing else.

Sorry guys, but this isn't technology, that's consumer electronics. There's no educational value and nothing technological about comparing weights, dimensions or camera Megapixels from different smartphones.

I really wish this dumbing down of the word "Technology" would stop.

They are examples of a technology, those sites and channels may not cover as broad an area as you'd like but they do cover some "machinery and devices developed from scientific knowledge..."

English often takes words and shifts the meaning.
+1 thats why few good books thats translated from ancient languages now have very misconcepting meaning. to know its original content is to go back and intimate to the original language that they were written in... hmm.

Every language does that, at least every commonly spoken language.   ;)
There are so many words that get butchered today... why make a fuss about "technology", not worth the hassle.

Not just ancient languages; there's many relatively recent examples of phrases & terminology in Modern English. My favourite is this sentence from Shackleton's "The Heart of the Antarctic" from 1909:
Quote
Blankets were served out to hang in the front of the cubicle, in case the inhabitants wanted at any time to "sport their oak".

People today tend to read that as a euphemism for masturbation, sex, or homosexuality. In reality, it's an 18th/19th/early 20th century term that basically means closing the door to your office so you can work uninterrupted...

I rather like this forum that exploits online digital blogging technology to discuss electronics engineering and the disciplines associated with it - as well as the consequences and applications in professional and consumer technology!
Don't ask a question if you aren't willing to listen to the answer.
