Possible sketchy source for parts
« on: May 04, 2022, 01:57:17 pm »
Hey guys,
I need some advice. I have a product that uses a pic16f1938, and there doesn't seem to be any available on Digikey, Mouser, or Newark which are my usual sources. I found this profile on instagram which added me and I asked her if they had the that model of pic. She was able to give me a quote for 100 of them. Price seems average.

Here is the profile:

Do you think she'll run off with my money? Am I being naive?  Does anyone here have any experience with these random chinese suppliers?

Anyone doing business over Instagram is a fool IMO.  There are too many scams there.

Nonetheless, if you pay via PayPal you will probably be safe enough,  as PayPal does tend to favour buyers fairly well.   If on the other hand they ask for crypto, bank transfer, Western Union etc., run a mile unless you are really sure about them.

Chances are they don't really have the part, they'll go out to someone else who will, add a markup and ship onto you - that's if they don't run off with your money.  They may do the typical Win-Source thing and come back to you asking for more money, or offering an alternative-but-compatible device (in so far as it *looks* the same, even if it's completely different chip).

That's much more than "possibly sketch", possibly sketch is more like eBay from not China.

yea, she asked for a bank transfer. Yea fuck it, not going to risk it. The parts shortage is making me search for components in the worst places  :palm:
