Title: Post a picture of a dog
Post by: Mr.B on June 20, 2017, 06:17:02 am
The ‘post a picture of a cat’ thread has recently had a bit of a revival.
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/post-a-picture-of-a-cat!/ (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/post-a-picture-of-a-cat!/)

I did a quick search and could not find a similar thread for the dog lovers among us… So here goes.
(I am a cat lover too and have posted in the above thread.)

Post a picture of your dog(s).
Bonus points for names and why they were named this way.

Below, black spot bitch is called Xerox.
Xerox Corporation were the first company to produce a commercially available and affordable mono photocopier machine. This Dalmatian was the first white and black dog that my wife and I have ever owned. (First Dalmatian.)

Below, liver spot dog is called Ubix.
Ubix Corporation were the first company to produce a commercially available and affordable colour photocopier machine…

Your turn…

I used to have a standard poodle. Amazing dogs. Smart, but can be really cheeky (and they know it). These days I live on property (with no fences) and I spend most daylight hours at work. I'd love a dog but it would be cruel to keep it locked up inside on its own. Besides my better half is enough work as it is. ;-)

Her name was Ula, named after an abandoned dog we had with the same name.
I did hike a lot with her around the country, and a curious fact, every time I did bivouac she wouldn't sleep, she stayed up guarding the area .  She would snarl and bark if she heard something suspicious, and I'm talking the middle of forests with no one around.

My dog Elowa loves the cold and snow. She can't get enough of it. Will sit out for hours in single digit (F) temps and refuse to come back inside.

The first picture is Mollie, she is a German/Australian Sheppard mix who will be 8 years old in October.  The second picture is her at a year old.  The third picture is Reese, a 3 year old red nosed Doberman mix.  Mollie got her name from the granddaughter who loved watching bubble guppies at the time.  Reese got his name because his coloring reminds one of peanut butter and he has a ring around his mouth that makes him look like he got into the peanut butter jar.

Sometimes you have to look at life like a dog.  If you can't eat or hump it, piss on it and walk away.

Wonderful!
I will have to use that elsewhere.

Thanks. She came from the pound at about 4 months old (she's 12 now). We were told she's a "malamute mix" but were never sure. Did genetic test last year and she's  Great Pyrenees, Malamute, Akita, Samoyed, and Rotweiler!

Here is our dog, a rescue puppy who was given up for adoption along with his mother and siblings (father is unknown). The mother and pups were being fostered and then adopted out at the beginning of August when they were 8 weeks old, when we picked him up.

As of this posting, he is about 23 weeks (5 months), and weighs 70 lbs.  :palm:  Thankfully he is a sweet dog with a great temperament.

Can anyone guess what he is mixed with? His papers say "American Bulldog Mix".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=At8iFP4m3xs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=At8iFP4m3xs)

I've attached photos of our dog, and below that we have photos of mom for reference (who is brown/beige). He was the only white pup in the litter... see red arrow in bottom picture. Dad must have been more hound-like, narrower droopier face.

For those who aren't so knowledgeable about dogs, what's the "normal" weight for that species at that age?
Title: Re: Post a picture of a dog
Post by: edy on November 17, 2020, 05:32:30 am
Assuming American Bulldog, he's on the red curve ("high average") given that he was 30 kg (66 lbs) at 5 months (22 weeks) last week:

The reason for the :palm: is that when you get a rescue mutt of unknown parental stock you need to be ready for anything.  :-DD

He's just a big lovable dog... even though we knew he was going to be on the heavier side (just looking at the mom) we didn't really appreciate it. He's larger than most of the dogs we meet on our dog walks. We tell people he's 5.... (knowing they'll assume years, as I purposefully pause a few seconds and then say).... months (to see the expression on their face as their jaws drop).  :-DD  These are mostly people with smaller dogs so they have no idea about the larger breeds, and he pales in comparison to some of the true giant mastiffs breeds that would be around 90 lbs by 5 months age (and he's only a paltry 70 lbs)!

Title: Coral, our Curly Coated Retriever
Post by: IDEngineer on November 22, 2020, 06:12:14 pm
This is Coral, a purebred Curly Coated Retriever (CCR or "Curly"). We got her at seven weeks, on the day we announced we were expecting our first and only child. Curlies are the original retriever breed; the other five are descended in one way or another from the Curly. The breed was almost lost during WW2, down to under 100 dogs worldwide. We're back up to about 5000 worldwide now which still makes them exceedingly rare.

The breed is described by the AKC as "wickedly smart" and that is a completely accurate description. Coral was the smartest non-human creature I've ever known with the possible exception of Mavis, a captive bottlenose dolphin that I got to scuba with (some amazing stories there too!).

At about six months she had a "play date" with a visiting dog. Two dogs, but only one big beef joint (bone). Coral had it and wanted a drink from a big pickle bucket we'd put out for water, but she could see the other dog just waiting to snatch it up. Her solution: Drop it in the bucket, drink (which meant she was blocking access to the bucket), then dunk her head down to the bottom to retrieve the bone. The standard poodle just stood there dumbfounded.

Coral was described as "almost human" by others. Her native element was water whether liquid or frozen. She would swim for 8-10 hours a day. If no one was around to throw a stick she would nudge one off the dock, wait for it to float far enough away, then jump in to retrieve it. She would swim with anyone, ride in boats, etc. She once jumped off the dock in early winter, not understanding that the ice wasn't thick enough to support her landing, and disappeared under the ice. I thought I was going in after her but she broke through several feet away and used her front legs to icebreak her way to shore. That only happened once.

Normal lifespan for Curlies is 10-13 years. Coral lasted 14.5, until finally it was inappropriate to medicate her past her infirmaties. Losing her was one of the worst days of our family's life but we would not have missed a single day with her. I'll admit to being a bit scared to get another dog, as it's unlikely we'd find another so intelligent.

EDIT: Forgot to explain the name. Her litter name was "Black", thus her formal papered name was "Black Coral". Black coral is rare. This gave her a connection to the water while also acknowledging just how rare and special she was. She certainly lived up to her name and her heritage. We miss her and talk about her every single day.

Neither will Fly as any real working strong eye dog shouldn't. You could call Fly dual personality such are the changes in her when there is stock around or stock work to do.
Wonderful young working dog and a lovely nature with it however like many eye dogs she can be indifferent to humans which not a bad trait.

Quote
And with TV, she doesn't even take notice. Maybe your TV smells interesting.
No, the program is a long running NZ farming series called Country Calendar and it has used the same theme music for decades and when Fly hears it she will come running from wherever she is to watch it. Just be sure not to be in her way as it's her weekly treat.
First episode 1966 !

Yes and now at 17 she's had Fly to beat into shape over the last 2 years which she has managed to do very well.
Featured a few times in the Cat thread.

We have been tracking his progress on this website ( https://en.belpatt.fr/chien/view/23251 (https://en.belpatt.fr/chien/view/23251)) and his growth curve is still maintaining a straight line so far, no signs of curving yet. How do you dog owners prevent your dogs from hurting themselves by ingesting or touching your electronics inappropriately? (thats a joke, knowing as I do how dogs like to "kiss" people)

I have been pining for a dog, and trying not to think about it. I really like dogs. Especially huskies/samoyeds/malamutes..

Here is a photo I saved of a strange dog costume I saw a while ago. What is it of? Maybe you can tell me? No this is not may dog.. I am "Dogless"  (spoken like the name "Douglass)

Cool, now I have to see that. The costume and the shape-shifting aspect reminds me a lot of The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, (all 3 versions) which I liked a lot. (My favorite one is the 1970s one set in San Francisco.. )

Here is a scene from The Thing. No dogs in it, though, unfortunately.

No good during the sound check. Makes the speakers howl.

Damnit. There's a joke in there somewhere.

A better picture of dog 4.    I had no plans to bring another one into the home after we lost dog 3.   Wife found dog 4 stuck in a kill shelter and had been surrendered twice.   It's been a few months and health has improved.  Proving to be a fast learner for being older.

A dog goes into a Post-Office, to send a Telegram.  It fills out on the form...
"Woof, woof-woof, woof-woof-woof, woof, Woof".  The PostMaster says...
"You know, for the same money, you can add one more 'Woof' if you want!".
The dog says... "Don't be stupid, that wouldn't make any sense!!!"  :-)

haha thanks for sharing, I'm about looking for the topic for Dog too. I recently discovered a study (https://iprice.ph/trends/insights/filipinos-and-vietnamese-are-the-likeliest-pet-owners-during-the-pandemic/?nocache=1) that said in Southeast Asia, people prefer dogs to cats by a factor of more than five haha ;D

Here is my dog, but he sadly left me a few months ago

(https://scontent.fkul16-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.6435-9/104928748_3640022366014841_915071904327640263_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=84a396&_nc_ohc=inWhhUqd49QAX9A7Iyz&_nc_ht=scontent.fkul16-1.fna&oh=21aeddf78ccff9171b74752f1fd71c2d&oe=61BBFE33)

I think people often have strong feelings about the dog vs. cat debate when it comes to pets. I'll post the quiz later for who want to know you are cat lover or dog lover

   This is 'CHASE'.
I commented to owner, after 9 days house/pet sitting for nearby relative:. "...that's the sweetest DOG I've ever known!  A nice, and sincere compliment:
That black Poodle is instinctive 'medical companion', the kind they set up with diabetics, etc.

Followed me, into the BATHROOM, and plunked down, waiting, to go back to bedroom. He would even 'groan', as he realized, yet another (sleep interruption).
And another...and another.
Every 25 minutes...

As a child I had a cat like that. Followed me everywhere, including the bathroom. Waited by the front door for me to come home from school. Would fetch toys, etc. Had the personality of a dog in the body of a cat. Most mornings I'd wake up and she would be asleep on the pillow next to mine.

The funniest thing was that when I got into my teens and started having girlfriends, she liked them... until I met the one I'm still married to. Somehow the cat recognized "this one" was more of a threat for my attention. She was very cool to my now-wife for the rest of the cat's life. That's much more dog-like behavior but as I said, this was a dog in a cat body.

Meet Tommy
We rescued him about 8 years ago from a puppy mill (he had heart worm a bad leg and was near death), he is now 13. Like so many like him he seems forever grateful and has the sweetest nature imaginable. My wife home cooks all his meals and we just adore the little guy.

I seem to have no idea how to embed this imgur post

https://imgur.com/a/JDOrS7z
Pop the image URL between IMG flags which you can embed in your post with the Insert Image button bottom left above the text box just above the Emoji's.

It should look something like this before you post:
[ img ] imageURL [ /img ] < (6 spaces added, 2 in each img bracket and 1 either side of image URL...none of which are needed)

Quote this message to see the proper syntax using your image URL.

For this to work properly I had to Copy/Paste the image URL from your imgur page.

This was Rascal. Named since when we were at the rescue choosing a dog, he managed to escape from the kennel area twice, once managing to get free outside with all the staff and us trying corral him back in. It was an apt name, he was clever and mischievous to the last.

He lived a good life and was put down at age 14 due to chronic pain and most likely cancer. Miss the poor guy, haven't had dog since.

Rotate 'wow dog' half a turn and you get '6op mom'.

This is almost as much fun as printing single-character ASCII animations like cococococoO08BRPpococococo.  I think.

Max admit Boomer good dog.

Therefore would be legit to ask what is Max's admittance?  Admittance is the reciprocal of impedance.  If we were to draw the Admittance Smith Chart of Max as w = 4*(1-z)/(1+z) for simplification and a little zoom, we get this:
