Post order in the forum.
« on: May 25, 2020, 04:05:08 am »
Is there a way to make the order of posts in a topic start from newest to oldest or make it so when you select a topic it takes you to your last read post?

Thanks
M

Maybe I am having a moment here.  I cant see a "NEW" icon.  I have the show unread posts since last visit that is handy.  The problem I am trying to solve is say when I go to the TEA thread it opens up on the first post.  I then have to figure out where i left off reading.  That particular thread can have many new pages a day.

Any more clues ?

I know once I have it figured out it will be a face palm moment.

Assuming you use the regular browser view of the forum, not the "mobile" theme for small screens: In the "Unread posts since last visits" list, isn't there a small orange "New" button behind every topic title? Clicking that will take you to the first post in the respective thread which you have not read yet.

It‘s not exactly obvious that those little orange indicators are clickable... I thought for years that they were mainly meant to highlight threads which had new activity. Don‘t recall who clued me in that one can actually click on them, but I didn‘t figure it out myself... ;-)

You can also try: Profile>Modify profile>Look &Layout ("Theme"), then be sure "Show most recent posts at the top" is checked.

It’s like Christmas.  All my dreams are coming true.

Thanks for that.

If you do that, you'll invert the threading - 'show most recent posts on top' puts them in reverse order - last first and first last.

If it jams, force it.  If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway...

That doesn't seem to bother most Millennials, but Greybeards and other 'Old Farts' may well sarcastically reply with:

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing in e-mail?
if forced to use that message display format, if they stick around at all!

It is what the thread starter asked how to do.  Since it doesn't affect how posts are arranged on your machine, why is it a concern?

Well, yes, but he also asked to be taken to his last read post, which I interpreted as his primary interest.  This method doesn't to that - it takes you to the last post in the thread, but puts it first, in reverse order.  If several posts have been made since the thread was last accessed, the last post read will still be buried in the middle somewhere, just closer to the top than the bottom.

I ended up reverting back to the normal post order.  It turns out it was not the droid I was looking for.

As a 40-year old sometimes (mistakenly) accused of being a millennial, but who already has some gray beard hairs, I feel double triggered by this! :p

I feel your pain.  Being lumped in with the generation Whyyyy’s although i fit in due to being born a few months late i feel a little cheated sometimes.  I think I relate better to the Gen x’s ideology.

Its the only time I find myself telling the odd lie about my age 🤪.

I didn’t think Gen X’s where allowed to feel triggered.  Isn’t that one of the defining traits of Gen Y?
